Summary text ("How should a seven year old child react when forced to be separated from a mother who meant everything to her? How should she react when she learns that the aunt with whom she was sent to live doesn't really care about her? Will she be able to make real friendships with people outside her family? Would she be able to take her belief in God as a comfort? If you want to find answers to all these questions, read the enjoyable novel "The Wide, Wide World". There, you will see how the amazing Ellen Montgomery reacts to all those things, and many, many more". Summary by Stav Nisser.)
  • Target completion date: August 2009
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/18689
  • Type of proof-listening required: Standard PL
-- Do the intro and disclaimer match the instructions in the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there any long silences or pauses that ought to be edited out? If so, note the time.
-- Are there any repeats, or serious stumbles that ought to be edited out? If so, note the words and the time.
-- Is there excessive background noise, a constant hiss or buzz that detracts from the reading?
-- Did you need to turn your volume up unusually high to listen to the recording? (Or did you find the recording too loud?)
-- Are the correct closing words used at the end of the recording, as per the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there 5 seconds of silence (10 if the recording is more than 30 minutes long) at the end of the file?

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project will be opened up to a group project as soon as a Book Coordinator can be found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to have it re-instated).

I'm adopting this from miss stav's suggestion last year
http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14777

At the beginning of the book, before the first chapter, there is a poem. Would I consider this a preface, or just include it in chapter 1? The rest of the chapters do not have this.

Here's what I'm talking about:

"Here at the portal thou dost stand,
And with thy little hand
Thou openest the mysterious gate, —
Into the future's undiscovered land
I see its valves expand,
As at the touch of FATE! —
Into those realms of Love and Hate."
LONGFELLOW.

THE WIDE, WIDE WORLD.

CHAPTER I.

Breaking the News.

"Mamma, what was that I heard papa saying to you this morning
about his lawsuit?"
"I cannot tell you just now. Ellen, pick up that shawl and
spread it over me."

Hi Bridget,
I think those lines before the first chapter doesn't need to be a section. It will take you about a minit to record it, I guess. I would join them with the first chapter.

Hi Lucy and Bridget,
would you like me to do the proof listening for this project? It sounds like a great book.

Hi Bridget,
there is something which I don't understand in the text of chapter 1 You read "not... And leave me mother". Is that what is written in the text or is this a stumble?
Since the sentence "elen, elen, listen to me" there are brakes in the recording every minit. Is this a problem in my side? Please check it. May be this is the result of many long brakes that cut the recording? Maybe you did to much noise cleaning? I will listen to the chapter again when the problem it solved, I would be able to do a better job than.

Hi Stav,
"not... And leave me mother" is the way the text is.
I'll check over the chapter - when I listened to it as an .aup file last night, it was fine so maybe something happened when I exported it. Do you know about what time the breaks start happening?

Hi Bridget,
in order to find the time in which the brakes started, I listened to chapter 1 again. There were no brakes, the file was ok. The chapter is wonderful. But I can tell you that the brakes I heard in the first time I listened to the chapter were disturbing and annoying. Next time, I'll listen to a chapter again before I tell you that there is a problem with the file. I hope you are not to worryed.

No problem, Stav.
I couldn't do anything with it until this evening anyway. Glad it's OK.
