Candide by Voltaire.

This project is now complete and can be found at http://librivox.org/candide01/

I was so shocked that Project Gutenberg didn't have this book in English Translation that I got a PD-aged English version and started scanning. PG gave me a copyright clearance on it, and these scans will be going through their Distributed Proofreaders---but you all get them even a little sooner!

Each chapter will have a link by it for a zip of the scanned pages, which are b/w 300dpi pngs. Just download your section and go! The chapters average 4-6 pages in a small-format book and should be pretty quick. The Introduction and Chapter 1 zips have some extra pages of padding included, title page and such---if you DL all the zips you'll have the full sequence of pages.

Eventually there will be 30 chapters, but I decided to go ahead and start early. ^_~ Also, when I submit this to PGDP, I'll try to coordinate with them. Hopefully we can have our audio version included in the PG release!
  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones marked "OPEN" are ?up for grabs.? Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you?d like to read (include the blue number, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: 31-August-2006
We can be pretty relaxed about deadlines, but we're all in it together wanting to see more finished books, so try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it?ll go back to the pool. There?s no shame in this; we?re all volunteers and things happen.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Click the link to the zip file by each chapter.
  5. Please claim chapters (the blue numbers)!

Reader list last updated: 3rd September-2006
    Chapters claimed: 31 / 31

I like it when people in my projects take two chapters in a row, so I will take 01 and 02.

Hello Fox,

I will MC you. I presume you know the process...

This novel satirizes the philosophy of Leibniz and I immediately thought of this old joke:
the optimist thinks with Leibniz that we live in "the best of all possible worlds", the pessimist fears that this is exactly the case... :D

These are very short chapters. I'll take the next three, which should be 03-05. Thanks!

Okay, all chapter pages are now scanned and uploaded!

...And I claimed the conclusion.

The book will soon be winging its way to PGDP as well; I'll keep you posted on its progress over there.

PGDP Update:

Our own cbgrf also does OCR at PGDP and has taken up Candide. He says it should go into the P1 proofing queue sometime today!

You can help out at:
http://www.pgdp.net/

(I wouldn't expect this to stay in P1 for very long, though! )

Hello Fox in the Stars!

I'm a total newbie to LibriVox. I find the whole thing realy exciting having been an audiobook adict since I was a child. I've spent a lot of time recently working on a bunch of podcasts and have enjoyed the recording process. So it seemed like a good idea to get involved with LibriVox. Then I find Candide has not been completely recorded...since I really like the book I thought I should 'claim' a couple of chapters.

So if I could claim 06 and 07 that would be really good!

Hey Fox, I've recorded, but I just thought I should ask before editing. Do you want all three chapters in separate files, or can I make it one file? All three together should be 20 minutes or so, probably less. If so, would cadide_03-05_voltaire.mp3 be the way to do that?

Thanks!

Edward - Welcome to Librivox! Great to have you aboard! :D

06 and 07 are all yours! Be sure to read the first post thoroughly; it should tell you or link to what you need to know about our procedures and everything. If you still have questions or need any assistance, just let us know!

Dragoness - I would prefer all three chapters in separate files. Thanks for asking!
