Does anyone want to choose next week's poem? Otherwise, unless I'm interrupted, it's another difficult one, one of John Donne's.

Nice counterpoint to the festivities too.

Oh, Donne is wonderful! I remember writing a paper on him in college. Great choice, Peter.

Yup, Night Before Christmas is coming up next, but let us know if you'd like to run the poem after that (Dec 25th - 31st).

I'm not doing this one, Peter, I'm sorry to say. I just finished recording Whitman's "Drum Taps" and I can't handle any more war for a while.

I've just downloaded the two new Roads; not listened to them yet. Done: thanks, Sean and Hugh. Sean, how did you get your recording so clean? .. much better than I can manage.

Night before Christmas is next ... Kara running it?

Kara, I can understand your war saturation; I was looking through Up the Line to Death, which is a WWI poetry anthology, before I chose Sassoon' poem from the Gutenberg collection instead. It's very easy to drown in the emotion.

The John Donne poem I was thinking of is "Song", which I first heard as a beautiful folk song by John Rembourn over thirty years ago. A little misogynistic; perhaps he'd just broken up with someone, but a lovely poem with a complex structure and complicated blocks of meaning running across the ends of the lines.

I'm probably going to be out of action over the Christmas and New Year ... or at least, not within range of a computer ... so I'll do it sometime in the New Year, if I may.

I generally record on a laptop, which does a nicer job of background hiss than a full-blown desktop computer.
I also recently acquired a Pocket PC and, if I can find a program to record to MP3 using that, will try some recording there (as it fits in my hand, can go find somewhere quiet to record, like on top of a mountain or something if it gets warm around here).
I also timed the recording so as to minimize the fan noise - not something you can do with longer pieces but works well for short poetry.

Ooooo, goody! Something in that poem brings back all the childlike wonder of Christmas for me!

Hey readers, The Road is cataloged!

http://librivox.org/the-road-by-siegfried-sassoon/

I don't know if "dhf" has a website... can't even find him in this thread.

Good work, everyone. Please let me know if I misspelled anyone's name. No links on archive.org yet, that will have to wait for another day.

Peter, thanks for coordinating this one. Sending me all the files in a tidy zip, with proper filenames and id3 tags (and initials!), was a tremendous help.
