The Extraordinary Adventures of Arsène Lupin, Gentleman-Burglar by Maurice Leblanc.

This gem is in the LibriVox jewels now:
http://librivox.org/the-extraordinary-adventures-of-arsene-lupin-gentleman-burglar

"Arsène Lupin in our midst! the irresponsible burglar whose
exploits had been narrated in all the newspapers during the past
few months! the mysterious individual with whom Ganimard, our
shrewdest detective, had been engaged in an implacable conflict
amidst interesting and picturesque surroundings. Arsène Lupin,
the eccentric gentleman who operates only in the chateaux and
salons, and who, one night, entered the residence of Baron
Schormann, but emerged empty-handed, leaving, however, his card on
which he had scribbled these words: "Arsène Lupin, gentleman-
burglar, will return when the furniture is genuine." Arsène
Lupin, the man of a thousand disguises: in turn a chauffer,
detective, bookmaker, Russian physician, Spanish bull-fighter,
commercial traveler, robust youth, or decrepit old man. . . ."

A sort of answer to Sherlock Holmes from the other side of the Channel---and the law!---Arsène Lupin exerts a powerful charm even as he commits the perfect crime again and again, hoodwinking the French bourgeois, the police, and even quite possibly the reader! Unlike Holmes, Lupin's author never seems to have tired of him, and he stars in a number of books. This is his debut, an anthology of short adventures.

[Hi folks -- Laura, "Fox in the Stars" set up this great project and carried it through its first months. I'll take it through its final stages, so contact me with any questions, and contact Laura with any praise. :) --Anita/a.r.dobbs]

I claimed Chapter 1 for myself to start. ^_^

BTW, anyone more familiar with French want to, er, weigh in on how to pronounce Lupin's name? (Or any of the names in here, really). I'm easygoing about it myself and am not going to natter at any readers over how they say the names, but it would be nice to know.

I'll be your MC, I really like Lupin! :) Will claim something soon but need to get something else out of the way first.

Regarding pronunciation, if you're after a native French pronunciation, why not post in the [FRANCAIS] Les Liaison Dangereuses thread in this forum and ask someone to do a quick mp3 with the name? :)

Do you have space to keep the files until they're all done?

I'll add you to the catalogue now.

Plenty of space on my harddrive, but not on my web host. (I think I'm going to switch to one with more space soon, tho.)

Thanks, Gesine! :D

Not a problem! Take as many as you want. :D

EDIT: I'll claim Ch. 4 for myself, too. I like that one because we get to see Lupin work on the fly.

Hell and damnation. I was three quarters through recording chapter 3 when Audacity crashed on me. Now all is lost, and I cannot do it again. Sorry. Maybe I'll come back and claim a chapter later, but take me off 3 for now, please... :(

PS Enjoyed reading this so much!

Hey Laura, could I do The Queen's Necklace?

Also, I'm trying to encourage a friend to get into this, so is there a problem (with crediting people) if both of us read it? (Just to lend some colour to voices in the dialogue parts.) I'm not actually sure I'll manage, but I'm going to try!

Sure thing! I think it'd be great if you could read it with your friend; we'll figure out something for cataloguing. To start with, you could both introduce yourselves in the "read by" part of the disclaimer.

Wow!

I just noticed this thread... hooray for Lupin!

I had NO idea that he was an actual literary character. As I'm sure Fox knows, Lupin stars in a number of Japanese Anime, perhaps most notably the 1979 "Castle of Cagliostro" by Hayao Miyazaki.

The Lupin in the anime is known as Lupin III ... and now I know why (he's Arsene Lupin the third, grandson of the original).

btw, I would think his name should be pronounced "Loo-pan" in English...

I'd volunteer to read... but I'm already over-committed! :(

I'll just have to listen! :)

Hey Gord -- I watched the anime years ago and didn't find out until a couple months ago that he was based on a book, either. :)

As a matter of curiosity, I had been planning on pronouncing his name "loo-pehn" (kind of French-ish)... are people saying "loo-pin" (like the flower) instead? I'd like to be consistent with everyone!

Yup, I've seen several of the Lupin III animes ---Castle of Cagliostro is probably my fave; even back then Miyazaki had the golden touch. I think it's quite loosely based, though, and when I started reading the original, I like it even better. ^__^

Apparently in translation, original Lupin is quite popular in Japan, but just didn't really hit it big in the States.

As for pronunciation, I planned to pronounce it as French-ly as I could, like "Loo-pah(n)" with a kind of nasalised n. I'll admit though, if anything I was hoping not to have everyone pronounce it the same. ^_~

(Now, the Harry Potter character, him I pronounce "Loo-pin." And cuddle him aggressively, but that's not really relevant, is it...?)
