"Perceiving that much of the intrinsic value of these Journals would consist in a proper understanding of the historical facts to which allusions are made in them, I prevailed upon Mr. LOSSING, the well-known author of the "Pictorial Field-Book of the Revolution" to illustrate and elucidate these diaries by explanatory notes. His name is a sufficient guaranty for their accuracy and general usefulness" (Summary from the introduction)

Hi FNH, would you please read this sticky: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13513 and edit your first post accordingly?

I made some edits, if there's anything missing you'll have to tell me what it is.

FNH wrote:The book does not appear to have any chapters, it is only split into two segments. However I do not believe that just two segments will be enough :)

I think we'll have to determine the final number of parts once the recording is done.

This will take a long time as I only plan to record about 5 minutes a week. Could it be released in such short segments?
Hmm, 5 minute splits might be a little annoying for listeners because the actual text is not split this way? I'd suggest the following division:

Part 01: Advertisement (296 words)
Part 02: Introductory Remarks to Journal #1 (827 words)
Part 03: First part of Journal #1 (Journal #1 is 6582 words long, plus 3493 words in footnotes)
Part 04: Second part of Journal #1
Part 05: Third part of Journal #1
Introductory Remarks to Journal #2, 479 words (couple of minutes)
Part 06: First part of Journal #2 (Journal 2 is 6818 words long, plus 4358 words in footnotes)
Part 07: Second part of Journal #2
Part 08: Third part of Journal #2

So the longest parts would be less than half an hour long (100 words = about 1 minute recording, on average). You can still record in 5 minute batches - just save your file, and restart your recording at the end of the last recording. Shouldn't be a problem.

Don't know if you want to read the supplements?
File name : MilitaryJournal_01_Tomlinson
Tags :
Title = 01 Part 1
Artist = Abraham Tomlinson
Album = The Military Journals of Two Private Soldiers
Filename should be all lower case: militaryjournals_01_tomlinson.mp3
Suggest you leave 'The' out of the Album tag to shorten it.
This book has many many footnotes, (about 1 per paragraph!) I intend to read these as they come up, and apply a slight audio filter to them so that it is obvious they are footnotes.
Reading the footnotes as they occur (when it makes sense - could be at the end of the sentence/paragraph instead of in the middle of the sentence) is a good idea - don't know what you mean by audio filter but this might be a problem. Usually we say something like : "Footnote: [footnote text] End of footnote"

Hope this helps a little. :)

Sorry, could you please use the template for soloists (see point 3. in the sticky)? I realise you've supplied most or all of the info needed, but using the template just makes things easier all around, if you don't mind. :)

Sorry FNH - I know this is tedious, but you still didn't use the template. It's here: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/ProjectTemplatesForSoloists

Also, did you see my post above yours re splitting the project etc?

And I'd be willing to MC. I agree with Gesine, though...5 minute sections are way too short from a listener stand point. Maybe you could record 5 minutes a week and splice them into 15-20 minute sections for final release.

It's a worthy project...please don't give up on it.

Well, FNH already seems to have taken that suggestion, as he now suggests to make 8 sections... See the first post. I think that was his plan from the beginning, recording in stretches of 5 min but sticking them together. So it will be OK.

Okay, let me go set up a window...be back shortly.

EDIT: Done. I've also pasted in the missing bits of the template for you...the Intro/Outro wording, and the uploader instructions.

I've also left the leading zero in on the ID3 tags and on the filenames, just in case you want to split the actual journals up into 4 or 5 sections each. If you need additional sections, I can add some very easily. If you stick with 8 sections, I can remove the leading zero at validation time.

I've also pasted in Gesine's suggested titles for the sections up through Journal #1. That way if you add part 4 and/or part 5, we won't have to cut and past the rest of the titles down. One idea I had while setting up the window entry was to have the actual Journal sections titled "Journal #1, Date 1 through date 2", etc. It's only a suggestion, you can decide how you want the titles to appear.

Oh! :D Thankyou very much for sorting that out for me!

I DO intend to record a few 5 minutes sessions and join them together to form the larger parts. I'll start on this project this weekend.

Thankyou once again. :)

I've uploaded the first file...

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/pw/twomilitaryjournals_01_tomlinson.mp3

This is extreemly short. Is that acceptable, it is a complete segment ( the advertisment ) or should I roll this into the next section. I have seen very short opening sections on other librivox books so I'm guessing it should be okay.

The sound effect used to open the recording is public domain and the details of it's public domain-ness can be found on this page...

I'd go ahead and leave it as a separate section, even though it is under three minutes. It doesn't really belong with the introductory notes to Journal #1, in my opinion. Others are welcome to disagree, however, I don't claim to be infallible! :)
