Five Children and It, by E. Nesbit

Magical adventures with a sand-fairy! Chapters are fairly long, so we'll do them as individual files. How do we pronounce "Psammead", any ideas? I've always said "sammy-ad" -- no idea if that's correct and it's a made-up word so google is no help.

I'll do chapter 4.

"Psammead" I think is supposed to be pronounced either Psammy-ad or Psammay-ad. The joke, I think, is the "psi" sound, which isn't used in English but is used in Greek. Probably only the Psammead would actually pronounce the "ps".

But you really should ask the classics majors who are reading Thucydides. I've never taken any variety of Greek.

I'm not very clear on how I go about doing this, but I'd love to be a volunteer reader. My older teen, who studies theater, is a fine reader, too. How do we get involved? I'll take any chapter of any book, but I'd prefer to be assigned something from The Five Children and It.

I'm new to this venture, but excited to jump in. I love reading aloud and luckily, my kids enjoy listening. How fun to have a new audience!

I've finished the first chapter. What fun! Nesbit is delightfully easy to read aloud -- especially when compared to Henry James!

I've noticed Alex and others saying the date and place of recording at the end of the track, and I've taken to doing the same. Feel free to do so also (unless Hugh scolds me). I think it'll be really fun for listeners to hear that info! I like it, anyway :)

I came across several obvious typos in the gutenberg text, so beware.

Yeah -- I like putting in the date and place. Place because we have such a geographically diverse bunch of people with very different accents. I just think that's interesting, and worth spending a second saying out loud.

And dates -- well, these are archives, aren't they?

typos ... if we feel up to it, we should report the typos to:
distributed proofreaders, a group that works on proofing gutenberg texts.
