Short Nonfiction Collection Vol. 010

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/short-nonfiction-collection-volume-010/

This collection is dedicated to recordings of short nonfiction works on any topic in English.

Please select and record any short essay or other nonfiction piece in the
public domain. Try to stick to works that run less than 60 minutes. You are welcome to contribute as many as you wish, and there is no need to "sign-up" before recording...as long as the work is clearly in the public domain, just start recording. Multiple versions are always welcome, so don't worry whether someone else has recorded your selection already; we're happy to hear your version too. :)

After 15 recordings are submitted, we will prooflisten, catalog and make them available to the public.

Recording Notes:
  • At the BEGINNING Say: "[Title of Work], by [Author Name]" "This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox Recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit Librivox.org"
  • At the END, say: "End of [Title], by [Author Name]" [/b]
If you wish, you may also say: "Read by...your name."

  • Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording or 10 seconds if the file is longer than 30 minutes.
  • Basic Recording Guide: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/NewbieGuideToRecording
  • Be sure to set your recording software to: 44100Hz, 16-bit, and save your mp3 files at 128kpbs
  • AFTER recording:
    • Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear distracting background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The free beta version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide. Note: Noisecleaning with other versions of Audacity is not recommended.
    • File Name: (lower case, with words separated by underscores):
      titleofwork_authorlastname_readersinitials.mp3
    • ID3 Tags: [list}
      [(]Title/Name: [Title of Work]
    • Artist: [Author Name]
    • Album: LibriVox Nonfiction Collection Vol. 010
  • How to submit your recording:

Please use the new Librivox uploader to upload a copy of your mp3 file for prooflistening and cataloging.

    Librivox Uploader: http://upload.librivox.org
    Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)

You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: pw- PaulW

The uploader displays a permanent link to your file when the upload is complete.

Please always post this link in this forum thread when you've uploaded a file.

Please post the following information with your file:
    • Source from which you read (i.e. Gutenberg etext url)
    • Length in minutes of your file.
    • If this is your first Librivox recording, I will also need your name as you would like it to appear on the catalog page and the URL of your homepage if you have one and would like it linked to your name on the catalog page.
Want to see if what you plan to record has been done already?

Search by keywords in the Catalog Search

But don't let this stop you from recording your own version!

(PL = Proof-Listening; PLC = Proof-listening Complete; PL OK = ready to catalog)

Please note that the recordings in this collection will cataloged in alphabetical order, although they will be initially entered into the magic window in the order they are submitted.

Contributions which didn't fit this volume anymore - will be moved over to Volume 011 as soon as it is started up - still need PL as well!

PL notes: The Philosophy of Composition has an extra "of" at 17:15 and the reader swallows at 18:26. I think both could be edited out without re-recording anything. The outro says "End of Essay", should perhaps say "End of The Philosophy of Composition"?

Just realized that this one wasn't even set up all the way. That would explain the lack of submissions! Well it's open for business now.

Hi Leon,
Here's a recording for the collection: Info on this work on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fable_of_the_Bees

As the author was originally Dutch (but emigrated to England and wrote all his major works in the English language), I thought I would have the appropriate accent for it

Hello again, Leon,

Here's my recording for short nonfiction collection #010.

File URL: http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/lm/plea_for_old_cap_collier_cobb_jt.mp3

Duration: 59 minutes, 38 seconds (just under 1 hour!)
Source: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/1891
Title: Plea for Old Cap Collier, A
Author: Irvin S. Cobb

I vividly remember laughing as I first read this with a friend in the first week of August 1955, when her family and mine were on vacation together on the banks of the Fox River near McHenry, IL.

I had no idea that the whole reading would run almost an hour! I had thought it would be done in about 20 or 30 minutes, but I just kept going in one sitting, once I got into the middle of it. I will get the word count to give myself a better idea for the future of how long of a reading time I can expect.

Hopefully the recording sound volume will be okay this time. I didn't hear any background noise when I tried listening to it.

Please let me know how it sounds to you.

Thanks,
Jack

Hi Jack,
Leon has been a bit busy lately - has a new job & is about to move etc... But I just wanted to let you know: your recording sounds great! You really get into the spirit of the text. The volume & background sound OK to me.

(I didn't listen to the whole of it yet, it will still need proof-listening)

Thank you very much for the contribution!

Excellent choice, I agree. Cobb is genuinely hilarious!

However... Isn't it fiction?

Jim,

Wow, I never considered it fiction. I thought of it as more of a humorous essay about children's literature. The literature referred to is fiction, but this essay itself is not fiction in the sense that O. Henry's stories would be fiction. At least that's my take on it, but I'd like to hear other opnions.

Yeah, I can see that. Doesn't matter to me either way, of course. Any how you categorize it, it's a wonderful piece.
