The Island of Dr. Moreau
Chapter 17: A Catastrophe
64kbps mp3
individual download
missing section
At 2:50 the reading skips two paragraphs. After the line "It met its persecutor with a shriek, almost exactly like that of an angry virago," it skips right to "Great God, Prendick!", missing these two paragraphs:
Then suddenly something happened,--I do not know what,
to this day. I heard a short, sharp cry behind me, a fall,
and turning saw an awful face rushing upon me,--not human,
not animal, but hellish, brown, seamed with red branching scars,
red drops starting out upon it, and the lidless eyes ablaze.
I threw up my arm to defend myself from the blow that flung
me headlong with a broken forearm; and the great monster,
swathed in lint and with red-stained bandages fluttering about it,
leapt over me and passed. I rolled over and over down the beach,
tried to sit up, and collapsed upon my broken arm. Then Moreau
appeared, his massive white face all the more terrible for the blood that
trickled from his forehead. He carried a revolver in one hand.
He scarcely glanced at me, but rushed off at once in pursuit of
the puma.

I tried the other arm and sat up. The muffled figure in front ran
in great striding leaps along the beach, and Moreau followed her.
She turned her head and saw him, then doubling abruptly made
for the bushes. She gained upon him at every stride. I saw her
plunge into them, and Moreau, running slantingly to intercept her,
fired and missed as she disappeared. Then he too vanished
in the green confusion. I stared after them, and then the pain
in my arm flamed up, and with a groan I staggered to my feet.
Montgomery appeared in the doorway, dressed, and with his revolver in
his hand.

Archive is up to it's usual "I'm too busy right now" self, so I can't download to check it. I'll keep trying both the 64 and 128 files.

It was read by JemmaBlythe, BC was Xander, and MC was Kara.

I'll update again after I get both the problem 64k and I'll also check the 128k file as well, because unless there was a problem in deriving the files, the 128k will probably be missing the paragraphs, as well.

EDIT: Finally managed to get the files. Both 64k and 128k files are missing the indicated paragraphs. There is also a 3+ second pause at that point, which leads me to believe it may be an editing error. I'll PM Kara and see if she knows anything about this.

Drop Jemma a PM -- she's awesomely quick at fixing any sort of problem in her files! (Well, I've only actually seen one problem in all her files recorded ... but she was quick to fix that one!)
There's honestly no such thing as a stupid question -- but I'm afraid I can't rule out giving a stupid answer : : To Posterity and Beyond!

Hi Paul, Kara, Cori,

The two missing grafs are linked at
http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/pw/moreau.ch17.twografs.jb.mp3

My original Dr. Moreau notes and recording are tightly filed away, thanks to switching from a PC using Audacity to an iMac, trying to conquer GarageBand. I did use the LV "Garageband: How do I get started?" guide.

So, dear patient fellow LibriVoxians, please let me know how to turn the mp3 linked above into precisely what you need.

Cheers, JemmaBlythe

Kara, or someone else, will have to tell you all about GB...I, unfortunately, am stuck with a PC. :( If you want me to splice it into the current Chapter 17 MP3, I'll be glad to do so.

Hi Paul

Thanks so much for offering to splice my missing text recording into Chapter 17. Just let me know if the mp3 I sent is of sufficient quality to do so.

Jemma, before it goes up, you will get to hear it for yourself and give it the go-ahead. I'll get to it (hopefully) this evening, and I'll PM you the link to the fixed file.
