Hello, it's my first time. I am using a USB mic through Audacity.
This is the uncut file. I've been having a hard time getting the background noise down sufficiently (using Checker). It is only the computer fan and I can get it cut down with my newbie-editing Noise Reduction Effect but that also means I have to be extra loud in recording, so the db is over the limit. Also noting that I don't have access to headphones to hear the background noise so I don't know how obvious it is. Please let me know what steps to take!
Thank you

Welcome grid

All your technical settings are correct, except the volume which is too high at 94dB. The acceptable range is 86 to 92dB, with 89 the preferred target.

Your background noise level is actually fine. The only reason it is too high in Checker is because your overall volume is too high. Correct that and problem solved.

Make sure input gain slider in Audacity (upper right with the little mic icon) is well to the right. Then adjust the input gain on your mic so your raw recording has wave forms that peak at about the 0.5 marks in the Audacity window:

If necessary, adjust the volume level before exporting by going to Effects>Amplify and enter an adjustment amount. In your case, that would be -5dB. However it is better to record at a level slightly lower than 89, and then adjust up a few dB.

Please make a new test recording and post it in a reply to this message. I will come back and review it for you.

Thank you, I just couldn't get it down to a decent level that I could be comfortable with, even with some of the tricks.
This is the revised recording but it might as well be a brand new one: same mic, but different room and quieter computer.
