[COMPLETE] Painted Fires by Nellie McClung - brrot

Her character sketches and social commentary are very Dickensian. I quite like it. Here, Dr. St. John finally sees through his wife's pettiness.

Chapters 26 and 27 are PL ok. You are motoring through this! I am going away for the weekend to a yoga retreat so I might get a little behind.

Not to worry. I have chores to do and may take a few days off. Have a good retreat.

PS: I know it's anthropomorphizing, but Cleo and her pups choke me up

The next chapter shows Jack escaping 3 times from German POW camps. It follows "Three Times and Out", a non-fictional account of the life of M.C. Simmons, a Canadian soldier who also made 3 escapes in WWI. She was the ghost-writer, but borrows extensively from his story for this gripping chapter, which I hope to finish today.

Apologies. I accidentally. uploaded the wrong version. The correct recording has a length of 14:49, not 15:08.ASharma wrote: ↑November 8th, 2024, 11:27 am Chapter XXX: https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/paintedfires_30_mcclung_128kb.mp3 (15:08)

Hi Christine: I hope you had a good weekend. Our plans changed, so I managed to finish recording (now the hard part - finding the next book to record ). The final chapter carries a real emotional punch, which I found deeply moving. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Chapter XXXII, Conclusion: https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/paintedfires_32_mcclung_128kb.mp3 (8:21)
As we wind this project down, i realize that I had a typo in the book description, where I wrote
Also, in thinking about my story description, I had written:
Since she actually deals less with temperance here than in her other books, I'm wondering if I should replace "temperance" with something else, e.g. "the futility of war", which figures more prominently. What do you think?
Thanks

If it's not too much trouble, could you delete the redundant "the"?"the the grounds of the Manitoba legislature"
Also, in thinking about my story description, I had written:
the threads of McClung’s social activism, including temperance, woman’s suffrage, and the fate of immigrants in early 20th century Canada.

"the futility of war" as a substitute sounds good to me or "war rhetoric".
Thanks. I think I would go with "the futility of war", as it's a recurring theme e.g. in her short story "Men and Money" or other works, like "What twelve Canadian women hope to see as the outcome of the war" or "The Next of Kin: Those who Wait and Wonder".brownrottger wrote: ↑November 10th, 2024, 6:03 pm

I really enjoyed this book and hope to find another that hasn't been recorded yet.
