[COMPLETE] Painted Fires by Nellie McClung - brrot
I believe this is the (second) longest chapter in the book, with much heartache to follow!

I'm always happy to pass the half-way point

Chapter 20 ok PL ok. I dislike Mrs. McMann the most!
Chapter XXI: https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/paintedfires_21_mcclung_128kb.mp3 (24:07)
I'm torn between my dislike for Mrs. St. John and Mrs. McMann; the former was far more destructive, though there is something of a redemption ahead for her. I love some of McClung's language, which is just beautiful, as in the opening paragraph here.
Enjoy

Chapters 21 and 22 are PL ok. I love how she weaves her social commentary and spirituality into the story/ conversations. Also, the ring scene made me tear up!
Agreed. I'm glad I'm not the only one who tears up on reading this. The next chapter saw several moments that I had to re-record, as I was getting a bit tremulousbrownrottger wrote: ↑November 5th, 2024, 2:23 pm Chapters 21 and 22 are PL ok. Poor Helmi. I was deeply moved by the vignettes of the couples she sees on the train platform. Moreover, the cruelty of the women at the employment office is disturbing.

Oh, Jack. Ye of little faith. I think McClung sees men of as the weaker sex. I still marvel at the fact that, in 1916, she persuaded the men of Manitoba to grant the vote to women, the first province in Canada to do so. Can you imagine how persuasive she would have been to convince those rugged frontiersman, years before the Canadian government, the UK, or the US.
I hope you're still enjoying the book despite Helmi's struggles.
