Great Pianists on Piano Playing, by James Francis Cooke (1875 - 1960)

Volunteers outside the USA: James Francis Cooke died in 1960. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 70 years for authors who died after 1971; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
The full title of this book, published in 1913, gives a good idea of its contents: “Great Pianists on Piano Playing: Study Talks with Foremost Virtuosos. A Series of Personal Educational Conferences with Renowned Masters of the Keyboard, Presenting the Most Modern Ideas upon the Subjects of Technic, Interpretation, Style and Expression.”

The author, James Francis Cooke, in addition to publishing a dozen books, was involved in music in many ways, including as a composer, a music educator, the president of a music publishing house, and the editor of a music magazine. He taught piano for 20 years.

For this book, he interviewed 19 accomplished pianists of his day, gleaning their wisdom about a large range of topics regarding piano performance. In addition, each section ends with a list of ten questions intended to encourage the student reader to think about and interpret the interviewee’s advice. (Summary by Verla Viera)

NOTES: the word “technic” appears a lot in this book. This is the old spelling of “technique,” so you can pronounce it that way.

DO read the "Biographical" section. Note this in the intro given below. It precedes the main chapter whose page number is linked from the table of contents.

Aaand, we're set! James Francis Cooke is now in the system, and your Magic Window is in place!
Looks like Gutenberg.org has another of their periodic outages at the moment, but I'll be able to confirm the other details later.

Hi, Elijah. I see that you have 18 DPL projects and are behind by 40 sections that are waiting for your PL. I don't consider that sort of delay acceptable for the readers in my projects. Thanks for the offer, but I'm going to pass and wait for someone else.

Hi Verla. I understand that you’re concerned about the progress on my end, and I appreciate the feedback. I’ve been prioritizing my work on Librivox heavily this, and past month, and while I know there’s a lot of focus on the current status of PL projects (which, the oldest section was turned in on October 31st), I also want to assure you that I’m committed to finishing the work within the established time frame, and I’ve made steady progress on it. It's disheartening to be judged on the information or past performance, especially when I’ve been consistently committed and trying to contribute positively.

I appreciate your response, as this helps me reflect on continuing to improve (and limit the projects I'm in / complete in a timely manner), and I accept you'd like to consider for another DPL instead.

If I could contribute instead, however, by reading Chapter 10, I would be greatly interested.

Thank you, have a great day
Elijah

Good morning,

May I claim Chapter XVI S. V. Rachmaninoff: Essentials of Artistic Playing please? A bit of a long chapter but his work has given me so much joy over the years, time well spent I think.

Thank you,

Val
