Ha! Indeed (unless the attitudes of mothers have changed rather remarkably!)

I think, in fact, Fielding's usage was still at least partly current even in the first half of the twentieth century, though it's certainly gone the way of the dodo now. That said, it's striking how much less constrained Fielding was in referring to pre-nupuial sex and pre-nuptual pregnancy than, say, Victorian authors were.
