One of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, AYLI is a pastoral comedy of mistaken identity, wit, and love. Daughter of a banished duke and forced to flee the court, Rosalind hides in the Forest of Arden disguised as a man. When her true love Orlando also shows up in the forest, she courts him without revealing her identity. Meanwhile, Phebe mistakenly falls in love with her disguise, Silvius pines for Phebe, Jacques philosophizes, and Touchstone makes fun of it all, and love and happiness triumph (for the most part) as Rosalind orchestrates a happy ending amid the confusion.
How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: November 2008 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog. I have no problem with cross-gender casting, but try to make it sound as masculine or feminine (whichever is required) as possible.
Please note that several of the characters sing during this play.
Set your recording software to:
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
[*]DURING recording: Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording: Start of recording (Intro)
"[Character] read by [your name], [Act #]."
End of recording
At the end of the section, say:
“End of [Act #]" Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes! If your character is in more than one scene in a given act, please insert a tone or other distinguisher to mark the the beginning and end of each scene in the wave form.
Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
AFTER recording: Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
Save files as
128 kbps MP3
ayli_character_act#.mp3 (all lower-case). (e.g. ayli_rosalind_a1.mp3)
ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!
Title: ## - Character Name
Artist: William Shakespeare
Album: As You Like It
Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread): http://upload.librivox.org
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin) You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: law - chocoholic
Ah, yes! Thanks, gypsygirl. Sorry, I didn't look closely, just clicked and as it didn't work backed up to 'shakespeare.mit.edu' and went from there. (Same applies to the author and title Wikipedia links, I think.)
Still waiting for an MC, Rosalind? Well, one play at a time is really all I can handle, but as long as you are doing all the real work (grin) I'll MC this for you. Back soon.
OK, Rosalind, you're all set. I didn't delete all the "temporary" stuff from your first post yet (until you've had a chance to transfer it all to the MW) -- either you or I can get rid of it later.

O ye of little faith. Can I talk you into moving that up six months or so?

I don't know how to set up a magic window -- I know how it works once it's set up but I don't know how to create it...am I supposed to?
EDIT: Didn't look close enough...it's already there. ::FAIL:: Thanks, Laurie Anne -- I'll get to work on that right away.

Oh, you haven't BC'd before? Sorry, thought you had. I'll pm you everything you need for editing the MW. Piece of cake. Entering listen links is different for these dramatic works if you have more than one file per section -- i.e. more than one act per role. I'll try to find the link to the page that explains it.
No, it's ok -- I've BCed before. I misunderstood your note and thought you wanted me to CREATE the magic window as well as edit it. Didn't look up at the top where it was ALREADY CREATED. Editing it as we "speak."
