just had a listen and indeed the level of accuracy was perfect this time this saved me a lot of PL notes The part where they scarred themselves made me quite squeamish. Language notes always are of high interest to me, I wish that part had been longer.
Only a few small notes left:
> at 50:01: "not unlike those letters in the French verb 'hair', to hate" - if you want to be more precise on how to pronounce these letters, since that was the point of the paragraph, the French word is "a-eer" so the 'a' and 'ee' sounds are two different syllables, and not like the English "air"
> at the end: you have over 40 seconds of silence instead of the normal 5
> I would run a round of noise cleaning, maybe take a sample from around 53:05 (before outro), as the end silence seems to be completely clean and not useable as a sample.
thanks, and have a nice weekend
Wow and I just saw that the last two chapters are really small

[COMPLETE][SOLO]A Complete Account of the Settlement at Port Jackson by Watkin Tench - kit
So I have uploaded the last two sections (yay!) but I already just realised I've said the wrong chapter numbers. I will have a big editing session probably tomorrow, fixing up all the mistakes over the last few sections according to your PL notes.
Also I'd really like to record section 17 again, I'm so very unhappy with it! It kept raining heavily intermittently while recording, plus various other problems that has made the whole thing fuzzy and poor quality.

hurray !!! and these were so much shorter than the rest, what a relief.
ok I still had a listen to both, to check whether there are any other mistakes, but there aren't for the record:but I already just realised I've said the wrong chapter numbers. I will have a big editing session probably tomorrow, fixing up all the mistakes over the last few sections according to your PL notes.
Section 19:
> at 0:08: "chapter 18" – you said "19"
Section 20:
> at 0:09: "chapter 19" – you said "20"
> at the end: you have 7 seconds of silence instead of 5
I didn't hear anything too disturbing, but if you are really unhappy with the section, then of course I will relisten from scratch. Or you tell me precisely which minutes you have re-recorded and I spot PL those. But it's a long chapter, are you sure you want to redo it ?Also I'd really like to record section 17 again, I'm so very unhappy with it! It kept raining heavily intermittently while recording, plus various other problems that has made the whole thing fuzzy and poor quality.
In any case...we are approaching the end. What a ride. I'm glad you persisted till the end. It was a very interesting account, in my opinion.
So thanks for coming up with the idea.
Oh if you still want to change your initial summary, after now having read it all, please let me know, I need to paste any new text in the database as well.
Sonia
no problem, just let me know when you have changed it or post the summary in a new post here then I will definitely not miss it.
And section 16 is now PL ok thanks
Sonia
wohoo, yes we are getting there.
Section 19 is now marked as PL ok.
Still a bit of tweaking needed for the other two however:
Section 18:
> the volume is too loud, over 92 dB. This resulted in a lot of clipping (the red lines), so careful there. I would suggest reducing it all by -3 to get closer to the average of 89 dB
> from 0:01 to 0:12: the intro disclaimer is here replaced by the beginning of the chapter ("The last but the most important production yet remains to be considered. Whether plodding in London, reeking with human blood in Paris or wandering amidst the solitary wilds of New South Wales") How can that happen, I wonder ? In the previous file this was correct
Section 20:
> at the end: still over 7 seconds of silence, could you just reduce them down to 5 please ?
thanks
Sonia
Hi again!
Section 17 is officially cursed... I re-recorded the whole thing and the new version is full of plosives! Anyway, I've been editing it in small chunks over the last few weeks and have uploaded it - sorry to make you listen to it again. I've done what I could with the plosives and reduced most of them.
I've also made the changes to sections 18 and 20 and uploaded them.
I feel so bad about how much this is dragging on that I guess I will disclose, my mental health hasn't been going too well, and depression means that one doesn't even get the necessary things done, let alone extra things. But depending on your PL notes this time, maybe that's the end of recording! I will work on the summary and get that to you soon. Thanks for your apparently endless patience.

wonderful !!!! though section 20 still had 7 seconds at the end but to save you some time and hassle, I quickly deleted two of them myself and now it's all good.chocmuse wrote: ↑June 12th, 2024, 2:08 amSection 17 is officially cursed... Also I didn't notice any intrusive plosives in the audio of 17. But I can imagine you must be happy to be done with this.
I can safely announce: the last three sections are PL ok.
I am so sorry you are having a bad time. This is extra remarkable that you stuck with this project till the end and I am happy your did. As you probably are now as well, now that it is done (and wonderfully done).I feel so bad about how much this is dragging on that I guess I will disclose, my mental health hasn't been going too well, and depression means that one doesn't even get the necessary things done, let alone extra things.
Maybe having this burden off your shoulders will help a bit with your morale and make things easier.
ok let me know when you are happy with the summary and then I will start cataloguing.I will work on the summary and get that to you soon.
All the best, and I hope you will hop in again from time to time. Maybe not with a lengthy solo, but with participation in group projects, which can be much fun I can assure you. And less stress to have all the responsibility on your own shoulders.
thanks for the fascinating narrative at least, I enjoyed it.
Sonia
That's so kind of you Sonia, thank you so much!to save you some time and hassle, I quickly deleted two of them myself and now it's all good.
Here's my summary; if you have your own ideas about it I'm very open to feedback!
Watkin Tench was a British marine officer who sailed with the First Fleet from England to Australia, landing in January 1788. He first wrote an account of his experiences with the First Fleet in a book called "A Narrative of the Expedition to Botany Bay". Later he published this book, "A Complete Account of the Settlement at Port Jackson", where he takes up from where he left off in the previous account; July 1788 up until he left the colony in December 1791. This is one of the earliest published accounts of this pivotal period in Australian history. Tench displays all the assumptions and world-views of an officer of Imperial England, but also reveals his own intelligent personality and occasional flashes of empathy. The account is a classic of its kind and is invaluable to historians.
For further reading, may I recommend "The Colony" by Grace Karskens, a 21st century historian who presents a greater breadth of perspectives within this period with excellent insight and depth. Her depiction of First Nations Australian experiences at the time is revelatory. There is also a great novel by Kate Grenville called "A Room Made of Leaves" - fictional, but includes Watkin Tench as a character in the book, whose depiction I found very amusing.
this looks good to me, I'll take it over into the catalogue.chocmuse wrote: ↑June 12th, 2024, 8:59 amWatkin Tench was a British marine officer who sailed with the First Fleet from England to Australia, landing in January 1788. The personal final recommendations were not meant to be included though, right ? They don't really say anything about the book.
Cataloguing now, I will post the link when it's done, but it may take some time, depending how slow archive is.
Sonia
congrats, you are now in the catalogue
