So, we'll go no more a-roving by George Gordon, Lord Byron (1788 - 1824)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/so-well-go-no-more-a-roving-by-george-gordon-lord-byron/
To mark the 200th anniversary of the death of Lord Byron, Librivox volunteers bring you 22 recordings of his poem So, we'll go no more a-roving.

George Gordon, Lord Byron died on April 19th 1824 at Missolongi in Greece, aged just 36. In his lifetime he was renowned for both his poetry and his hedonistic lifestyle and was called "the second most famous man in Europe after Napoleon". His creation of the Byronic Hero influenced European literature through the 19th century and his work inspired music by Berlioz, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Verdi and Strauss.

(Summary by Alan Mapstone)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.
Project Code: fqrs0BEc

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

LibriVox recording settings: mono (1 channel), 44100 Hz sample rate, 128 kbps constant bit rate MP3. See the Tech Specs

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave ½ to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
So, we'll go no more a-roving by George Gordon, Lord Byron, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
So we'll go no more a-roving
So late into the night,
Though the heart be still as loving,
And the moon be still as bright.

For the sword outwears its sheath,
And the soul wears out the breast,
And the heart must pause to breathe,
And love itself have rest.

Though the night was made for loving,
And the day returns too soon,
Yet we'll go no more a-roving
By the light of the moon.
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

Alan, one misread at 0:32, I hear "And the soul wears out the breast," the text reads "And the soul outwears the breast,"

Hi David
There is a discrepancy in the sources on this line. I have amended the text above to reflect the PD source I named, which seems to agree with most sources except Poets Corner which I originally used.
So I will mark my recording as PL OK!

Actually, just one more discrepancy from the original. The last two lines of verse one should read:

Though the heart be still as loving,
And the moon be still as bright.

Thanks,
Bruce.

Thanks Bruce, I have corrected this one as well.
In future I will not trust Poets Corner
I feel really embarrassed about this

EDIT: I actually said "be still" in my recording

I hope the text is now correct for further readers.
