They are optional. I personally don’t like footnotes, but sometimes they do include useful or interesting information… in which case, why aren’t they in the main text

There are lots of footnotes in this text … I was just considering how confusing it must be for a listener. It’s rather different when someone is actually reading it - then they do have the option.

I’ll leave them out.
