When Dick Staines graduated from the University of Cambridge without family connections or inherited wealth, he decides to put his honours science degree in the service of Scotland Yard, where he is marked for rapid promotion. Ten years later, and Detective Inspector Richard Staines is confronted by a murder from his past, involving a doppelgänger and a mysterious thumbprint.

From the golden age of detective fiction, Edgar Wallace was a prolific author with over 170 novels to his credit, including King Kong. More than 160 films have been made of his works, and a publisher once claimed that a quarter of all books read in England at the time were written by him. (Summary by ASharma)

I have a question that perhaps one of you can answer. I understand that publications from before 1927 are in the public domain, as are books with authors who have been dead for more than 70 years. Do you know which criterion takes precedence. For example, Wallace died in 1932, with books published in 1930 or even 1933. Are those in the public domain even though they are not before 1927? Sorry if that's naive.

No, they are not in the public domain. All books recorded for Librivox must be in the Public Domain according to its copyright date (i.e., currently before 1927). The author being dead for 70 years applies to copyrights in certain countries. For instance, a book may be in the public domain in the US but if the author has been dead less than 70 years, someone from say Canada cannot be involved in its recording here because of their copyright laws.

A pleasure to be collaborating again. As usual, I'm in no rush. In fact, I expect things will slow down as the weather improves. For now, I've uploaded the first two chapters:

Wallace was a prolific author, mostly in the mystery genre. I think 18 of his novels have been recorded for LV already, though not this one. As you will see, it very quickly jumps into the action by the end of Chapter 2 .

I would value your opinion on one question, though. Unlike our previous collaboration (the Cheyne Mystery), this one lends itself much more readily to a single narrator's voice, since there are a lot of "he said", "she said" introductions. So I didn't individualize the voices, but if you find that it's confusing, please let me know. I could always re-do these two chapters.

Thanks; that's very helpful. Yes, you're right. Celia persuaded me to record another detective story after she read the "Cheyne Mystery", and I stumbled across Wallace by accident. I looked for another story by Crofts, but those still unrecorded were all published after 1928.
