redrun wrote: April 18th, 2024, 5:32 am Hmm, it seems odd that it would give that...

It should have you enter the name of the role, the catalog name of the reader (e.g. Greg Giordano, rather than greggiordano), and the web URL of the reader's page (e.g. https://librivox.org/reader/8011 ).
I wonder if perhaps you took an already formatted code, and pasted that where the app was expecting just the URL part. I think that would have it output what we're seeing. :hmm:

But, doesn't matter how we get the code, so long as we get it working in the end.
Maybe that's what I did. I guess the app is still a work in progress. Eventually it will be a little more intuitive and require less user input in order to generate a cast list.

Here's the edited list:

Duke of Aranza: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/8011"> Greg Giordano </a>
Count Montalban: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/11331"> Scotty Smith </a>

Okay - Great! :D

Let me give this feedback on the cast list app, though. As an editor, the most labor-intensive portion of the task of creating a cast list is looking up and transferring information from the database about each cast member. This app is not designed to speed up or facilitate that process in any way. It just formats that data and produces code for the cast list -- which is the super-important end-goal of the task, I agree.

Usually I use a word processor to create cast lists, cutting and pasting old formatting and info to new lists. Not an error-free process, but it workable.

This time, in addition to the normal amount of work I do to produce a cast list, I had to do a significant amount extra amount of typing to input information into the cast list app. Because I misinterpreted the directions and input incorrect data, I also had to do more work to edit the list. Probably wouldn't happen the next time I used the app, but still... frustrating.

I understand that MC want editors to use this app in order to produce error-free code. However, because the program created more instead of less work for me -- slowed down instead of sped up my process -- I'm disinclined to ever use this app again. We really need an app that addresses not only formatting output but retrieval of cast member information from the database -- that makes the process quicker as well as more error-free.

I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same app, but linking for anyone else who's following along.

I should push back just a little on the term "feedback" to say that just like Checker, this isn't even a LibriVox app, just something that somebody made, and that folks here often share because we find it useful. (I happen to have been able to make one tiny change to it years later, but that's details. )

Noted and agreed!

Myself, I use a spreadsheet. I copy/paste peoples' display names and URLs when they turn in their role assignments, and a very simple macro spits out their formatted link code in a fourth column. It still takes manual work, but it works well enough for me, because I made it and understand it.

Savvy folks will probably always have their own tools like this - some arguably much better than mine - but not everyone can make one themselves, or wants to.
So, a kind volunteer made this very simple little web app. It has never had a database connection, it isn't even on LV's server, it's just one handy way to solve the formatting part of the equation. In fact, the instructions on how to use it are longer than the logic code!
The best thing about it is that unlike my spreadsheet, it can be shared safely and very easily.

I have absolutely no objection to your using whatever process works for you, and I don't think other MCs would either. If I had a simple tool that would check your code for you, I'd be glad to share it... but I'm eyeballing it myself, until cataloging time.

Now, for making a new, official LibriVox Cast Code Generator... you should know that our wish list is pretty long. LV's code was written in 2013, we've had a very generous volunteer who "does the needful" with updates, and everything else comes down to people stopping by with code, or working on problems that interest them.
This has been on my own personal list for a while, but writing a brand new app with a database connection would be a significant undertaking for me. And certainly not the first on my list, which contains... um, let's say several of them.
I'll add it to the public list in case someone else has an interest, but in short, the only guarantee I can give is that if I can make such a thing, it won't be soon.

Yes, and congratulations!
I see the readers are assigned to the sections for finished acts, and all that seems to remain is to move them up to the top. I can easily do that (and delete the extras from there), but want to be sure you're ready before I do.
Description: check
Cast list: check
Assignments: check

Anything you'd like to adjust before we're off to the catalog?

I had a sneak-preview of the last act, which tells me I want to listen to the rest for sure.

Congrats, everyone!

Oof, thank you Alan, for catching that. That's what happens when I capstone the cataloging "real quick" before I have to do something else.
Corrected now.
