Section 5 is PL ok. Lots of metaphors in this section all around that same theme. We don't have to guess why this book was named as it was.

Section 10.
The outing to Nanterre is absolutely charming, and a welcome Calm Before the Storm. "Beautiful Lisa"'s (how ironic that name becomes!) near-murder of Marjolin is chilling.
I cannot make out what seems to be Zola's gross OVERemployment of the fat/thin idea. He's already laid it out more than adequately, and yet he allows Lantier to go on and on! Again, a subject rich for a dissertation.
