Drug Themes in Science Fiction, by Robert Silverberg (1935 - )

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/drug-themes-in-science-fiction-by-robert-silverberg/

Science fiction is more often a reflection of existing societal trends than a prediction of trends to come. The upsurge in drug use is precisely mirrored by the upsurge in the use of such themes in science fiction. Science fiction is as much a guide to where we are as it is a vision of where we are going. A literature so popular with the young , commanding so intense and devoted a following, can be of significant value in revealing the patterns contemporary society is taking and will take in the years just ahead. (Summary by Robert Silverberg, from Introduction)

Target completion date:

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

And just FYI, that while this was published in 1975, it's a government publication and never was copyrighted. Hence has always been in the public domain.

Nothing really new... A few of the ones mentioned are in the unrecorded sci-fi list. There are definitely some in the list that sound pretty interesting I'd like to track down just to read for myself though.

Sec. 2
:11 Why do you repeat “Section 2” here?

Have you recorded either The Literary Corkscrew or The Elixir of Progress? I'd like to listen to those.
