The Flexner Report. Medical Education In The United States And Canada, by Abraham Flexner (1866 - 1959)

Volunteers outside the USA: Abraham Flexner died in 1959. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 70 years for authors who died after 1971; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
The Flexner Report is a book-length review and investigation into medical education in the United States and Canada, written by Abraham Flexner and published in 1910 under the aegis of the Carnegie Foundation. The report concluded that the professional standard of medical science teaching and practice in America was below par compared to Europe, and was overconfident in the abundance of doctors as a false sign of strength. Many colleges and universities were found to be without merit, or lacking academic integrity, and not following a regulated standard. The quality of the training was often self reported and not under scrutiny, usually lacking in work experience or a review of skill. All too often the teaching staff were not involved in research, nor were working consistently in the medical profession, and prefered easy delivery lectures instead of the expense of training in a clinic. The report recommends many medical schools be closed, higher prerequisite standards for entry into medical studies, and stricter state regulation. (Summary by Leon Harvey)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I just realised I forgot to add a section 0 at the top for the introduction section, if this could be quickly added, please...

After reading ahead through this text, 100 years after publication, it is astonishing we are STILL duplicating similar problems consistently, and this book has even been regarded as a conspiracy to limit medical education and eliminate alternative medicine. Some people are still refusing to accept that pharmaceuticals needs to be regulated or realise the folly of 'poor mans' colleges. Maybe someone should get to work on a modern version investigating grade inflation from our modern establishments

Will do. This will be interesting to me in that I have been in the natural supplements industry for over 20 years.

introduction section is ready. There are in fact more chapters in the second section of the book which profiles the capacity and quality of medical education state by state. It might not be mentioned in this particular text, but there were also complaints about medical officers in the military that is touched on in one of the other books I am reading now.
