I don't know if you'd be interested in some trivia but here they are:
- I first learned of the Danish West Indies when I came across a piece of news that the Danish had sent a rescue team and pledged money to help what is today U.S Virgin Islands in the wake of hurricanes Irma and Maria https://www.fema.gov/press-release/20230502/team-denmark-supports-hurricane-recovery-efforts-us-virgin-islands
- while the part about Haiti is too short to include the info, the country does have a group of population with the Polish roots dating back to the slave revolution mentioned in the text; among the soldiers Napoleon sent was the so-called "Polish Legion" but the soldiers, coming from a country that itself had just lost its independence, couldn't find it in them to fight the freedom fighters; as a result many of them defected and when the hunt for the remaining French began, the Poles were explicitly granted immunity by the Haitian commander who reportedly called them "white negroes of Europe"; until today there are areas with population descending from those legionnaires; recently programmes were started in which children of those descendants have a chance to learn the language and culture of their ancestors! As a Pole I find it fascinating.
- those British Empire types did stir the pot quite hard making it so that you find really unusual things all over the former colonies; among them large groups of Indian descendants in some countries where the locals wouldn't work for the new masters and so the indentured servants fom India were sent; among those places are Trinidad (as mentioned in the text), Suriname, Mauritius or Fiji
Queued for PL, thank you!
Cheers,
Claire

An Easter present for ... <reads the slip> Cbteddy

I used to think that the whole "Norsemen in North America" thing was a recent discovery, but it turns out to be much older, already being speculated about in the 19th century. Also, technically it's the first Native tribes that discovered the land, no?
I remember reading about the Dighton Rock inscriptions too. They seem to defy explanation even today
Also, the author assumes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bertel_Thorvaldsen to be the descendant of one of the discoverers... Incidentally, two of Thorvaldsen's sculptures can be found in Warsaw, Poland...
