Doubts by Rupert Brooke (1887 - 1915)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/doubts-by-rupert-brooke-2/
Rupert Chawner Brooke was an English poet known for his idealistic war sonnets written during the First World War, especially "The Soldier". He was also known for his boyish good looks, which were said to have prompted the Irish poet W. B. Yeats to describe him as "the handsomest young man in England".
(Summary by Wikipedia)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.
Project Code: uD1v64bl

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

LibriVox recording settings: mono (1 channel), 44100 Hz sample rate, 128 kbps constant bit rate MP3. See the Tech Specs

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave ½ to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
Doubts by Rupert Brooke, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
When she sleeps, her soul, I know,
Goes a wanderer on the air,
Wings where I may never go,
Leaves her lying, still and fair,
Waiting, empty, laid aside,
Like a dress upon a chair....
This I know, and yet I know
Doubts that will not be denied.

For if the soul be not in place,
What has laid trouble in her face?
And, sits there nothing ware and wise
Behind the curtains of her eyes,
What is it, in the self's eclipse,
Shadows, soft and passingly,
About the corners of her lips,
The smile that is essential she?

And if the spirit be not there,
Why is fragrance in the hair?
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

Perhaps one glimpses the soul in flight, rather than in the usual, everyday surroundings. :)

Hi David,

Good, but just a few minor things you may wish to consider. . .

In line 1, verse 2 at 0:32, "For if the soul be not in place" I'm hearing "For *what* if the soul be not in place."

Also in verse 2 at 0:48, "Shadows, soft and passingly" I'm hearing "Shadows, soft and *passing*."

And at 0:50, "About the corners of her lips" I'm not hearing the "s" on corners.

Otherwise fine.

Bruce.
