The Mariner by E. Pauline Johnson (1861 - 1913)

This project is now complete!
All audio files can be found on our catalog page:
https://librivox.org/the-mariner-by-e-pauline-johnson/

Johnson was notable for her poems, short stories, and performances that celebrated her mixed-race heritage, drawing from both Indigenous and English influences. She is most known for her books of poetry The White Wampum (1895), Canadian Born (1903), and Flint and Feather (1912). (Summary by Wikipedia)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.
Project Code: JqINLP2v

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

LibriVox recording settings: mono (1 channel), 44100 Hz sample rate, 128 kbps constant bit rate MP3. See the Tech Specs

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave ½ to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
The Mariner by E. Pauline Johnson, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
"Wreck and stray and castaway." - SWINBURNE.

Once more adrift.
O'er dappling sea and broad lagoon,
O'er frowning cliff and yellow dune,
The long, warm lights of afternoon
Like jewel dustings sift.

Once more awake.
I dreamed an hour of port and quay,
Of anchorage not meant for me;
The sea, the sea, the hungry sea
Came rolling up the break.

Once more afloat.
The billows on my moorings press't,
They drove me from my moment's rest,
And now a portless sea I breast,
And shelterless my boat.

Once more away.
The harbour lights are growing dim,
The shore is but a purple rim,
The sea outstretches grey and grim.

Away, away, away!
Once more at sea,
The old, old sea I used to sail,
The battling tide, the blowing gale,
The waves with ceaseless under-wail
The life that used to be.
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

Hi David,

Just one thing, and I'm not sure of the LV policy on such matters, but concerning the first line:
The author "Swinburne" I think should be said "SWIN-burn" - with a short "i" and no "g" at the end.

Welcome to LIbriVox Roz :D good first reading, just a couple of items to fix
- take note of the silences on either end of the recording, our instructions...
Leave ½ to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.
- the volume is too low at 84.3 dB, you should aim for your waveforms to peak near the 0.5 mark, like this:

Image

You can check your volume using our Checker program - see info at http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker You will find the volume in decibels on the Information tab. For your information, we look for around 89 dB (87-91 is OK) (all the other tech specs are there also)

- at 1:15 I hear "The battling tide, the blowing gate," the text reads "The battling tide, the blowing gale,"

Could you please make these changes and upload a replacement file (using the same filename)

Here is my rendition of this week's poem. Let me know if I need to make any edits or adjustments. I didn't know how to do the quote in the beginning so I would also love your notes on that. Thank you!
