The Physician by John Frederick Freeman (1880 - 1929)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-physician-by-john-frederick-freeman/
John Frederick Freeman was an English poet and essayist, who gave up a successful career in insurance to write full-time.
He was born in London, and started as an office boy aged 13. He was a close friend of Walter de la Mare from 1907, who lobbied hard with Edward Marsh to get Freeman into the Georgian Poetry series; with eventual success. De la Mare's biographer Theresa Whistler describes him as "tall, gangling, ugly, solemn, punctilious". (Wikipedia)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.
Project Code: fUkGMZhj

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave ½ to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
The Physician by John Frederick Freeman, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
She comes when I am grieving and doth say,
"Child, here is that shall drive your grief away."
When I am hopeless, kisses me and stirs
My breast with the strong lively courage of hers.
Proud—she will humble me with but a word,
Or with mild mockery at my folly gird;
Fickle—she holds me with her loyal eyes;
Remorseful—tells of neighbouring Paradise;
Envious—"Be not so mad, so mad," she saith,
"Envied and envier both race with Death"
She my good Angel is: and who is she?—
The soul's divine Physician, Memory.
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

Hi David, yours is fine except I think I'm hearing at 0:22 "My breath" for "My breast".

Also, I'd be remiss not to mention that at 0:47 "saith" best should be said so as to rhyme with "death" to maintain the AABB pattern.

Thanks,
Bruce.

Hmm, my memories aren't always so kind to me. Just a matter of finding the right ones, eh? :wink:

I'll be out for a bit on this last weekend of April, but still checking in as I get the chance. I will try to follow up on Monday, with anything I can't do on the go.

Thanks for the edit Bruce. I had never heard of saith pronounced that way, but it appears so in the pronunciation sites.
