Maybe of some interest to us LibriVoxers is a recent podcast from the boys at Voiceover Body Shop (VOBS) with Dr. Dialect, P.J. Ochlan. He is an awesome coach and narrator.

Most of the subject matter has to do with audiobooks, including things to keep in mind when doing accents or character voices. A particular takeaway for me was that we do not have to convince the listener that we are someone else as there exists the conceit that one person is reading the whole thing, but it is more important to play WHO it is rather than WHAT they sound like (oddly, there are many times I make a decision to NOT do voices at all but somehow they end up leaking out anyway). Also in doing accents, like Dan, I go mostly with mimicry but there are some technical things we can keep in mind and listen for.

The funny Italian song in American gibberish they refer to at ~25 minutes in is here:

They go on to tackle the weighty 'herd of elephants in the room' of AI as well.

George the tech also asks about audiobook quality, corroborating what I've noticed and been surprised about as per the mostly subpar recording quality at Audible.

Anyway, I found it enjoyable and informative so hope you do too!

P.S. Back on the subject of accents, maybe it is my wrong thinking but usually I try to keep them soft deliberately so a typical American, like my wife for example, can still understand the words 😅
