Praise received for dg73 (Dan Gurzynski) from our 'Thank a reader' feature:
Dear Dan Gurzynski,

I am only lately come to LibriVox and have just listened avidly to your reading of PG Wodehouse’ Bill The Bloodhound.

Your voice, tempo and intonations are just perfect for this story, and I wonder if you are an actor.

It certainly sounds like it.

Anyway, thank you so much for a wonderful auditory foray with all the charm of Wodehouse through your voice.

Praise received for msfry (Michele Fry) from our 'Thank a reader' feature:
Dear Michele Fry,

I am fairly new to Librivox….just two weeks listening, whilst laid up , avoiding the usual evening TV in the sitting room, so as not to pass on any “bugs” to my husband. My health is nearly returned now, but I find I don’t really want to go back to the television. I just want to continue exploring Librivox!

Anyway, I just listened to you reading “An Object of Love” by Mary E. Wilkins.

I was enchanted by the charming story and your voice.

I found myself much distressed when Ann lost her cat, and so happy when Willy was found again. I got really touched to the heart by that story.

I shall look up other stories which you have contributed to Librivox, to hear your beautiful accent again.

Thank you so much.

Thank you Michele for your wonderful recording of 20000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. You did such a great job I really enjoyed the story. Captain Nemo's character is legendary and loved the way you did Ned Land's voice. That was a large book and I just want to say I appreciate all the time and effort you put into your work. Greetings from Kansas!

Hello Michele,

I would like to thank you for contributing the story, "A Legend of the Dawn," to LibriVox. As a scientist, copyright-free, professional-quality recordings like yours are a vital resource to me. Since I know I'm not the only researcher who is interested in using naturalistic stimuli like spoken narratives, I have an ongoing project entitled, "Engaging Stories for the Study of Attention and Audition," in which young, healthy participants rate their level of engagement with narratives. I selected your story since its spoken length is within our desired duration, and the quality of your recording was extremely high.

In this study, participants read the story and then filled out a survey to measure their engagement/enjoyment. At the end, they also listened to a brief excerpt from your recording and rated their enjoyment for it as well. The goal is to empower researchers who study hearing and attention to use stories that young people like, so that they will enjoy the research process, and truly try their best when we challenge them to do things like listen to speech in noise.

Thank you,

Lauren

Praise received for sjmarky (Mark Nelson) from our 'Thank a reader' feature:
Thank you Mark Nelson for your reading of the 1956 novella Citadel of the Star Lords by Edmond Hamilton (https://librivox.org/citadel-of-the-star-lords-edmond-hamilton/). Listening to one of your readings again after a several month abstinence felt like meeting an old friend. I am saving two of your more recent shorter works, like one saves his dessert during a meal. Thank you for continuing to volunteer for LibriVox!

Praise received for KevinS (Kevin S) from our 'Thank a reader' feature:
Many thanks to KevinS for reading "In the North Woods of Maine." This was absolutely fascinating, and so well narrated.

I looked up the author, E. E. Thomas, and found a long obituary, about his life, tragic drowning, and this book.

Thanks again, LibriVox, for another superb memoir.

Praise received for Mermaid (Mil Nicholson) from our 'Thank a reader' feature:
Dear Mrs. Nicholson

I want to thank you most warmly for your exquisite readings of several Dickens novels that it has been my privilege and great pleasure to listen to. Being a comparative newcomer to the world of audiobooks I never could have imagined what a wonderful experience was in store for me. I thoroughly enjoyed Barnaby Rudge which is supposed to be one of Dickens’ less regarded novels, but from the very beginning I surrendered to the description and personalization of the raven, and I understand now – that I just finished Dombey and Son – that it was your reading that captivated me from page 1. My first audiobooks were readings of Danish classics like Pontoppidan’s trilogy: The promised Land, Lykke-Per and Realm of the Dead followed by a Danish translation reading of Marcel Proust A la recherche du temp perdu, all of them wonderful, but your readings are pure art. Rarely have I enjoyed anything so much.

One of my best friends is a well-known Danish actress, performer and reader of classical texts, Lone Hertz, and she tells me that reading aloud is one of the most difficult disciplines in the performing arts and I can well believe her. She is excellent herself but you are the best I ever heard.

So thank you once again, Mrs Nicholson! I see to my delight that I have many more books in store that you bring to life and I look forward to listening to every last one of them. It is an interesting fact that I used to seach for titles or authors, now I search for books read by you.

Your grateful reader

Annie

Praise received for GordMackenzie (Gord Mackenzie) from our 'Thank a reader' feature:
Dear Mr. Mackenzie:

I stumbled upon your Librivox reading of Thoreau's Walden about six years ago. I was on my way to my first Thoreau AG (Annual Gathering, or conference), in Concord, MA, driving alone from Philadelphia, and I thought it would be a good idea to "brush up on" my Thoreau. Unable to turn the pages myself while driving, I was able to access Librivox and your reading. (YouTubes of the same title denied me simultaneous access to Maps, so Librivox proved the better source.)

And, since then, I've never sought another version. In fact, your excellent reading - where you take the outdated diction and syntax and, using tone, inflection, and volume, get the meaning across (all 200+ years!) to the present listener - has become a mainstay of my Thoreau activities. I've listened to Walden, read by you, over and over again. (I teach Thoreau in Eng 101 at a local community college, and I recommend your readings to my students.)

In fact, I suddenly realized at one point that when I thought of Thoreau, I heard him speaking in your voice. I realize you're a trained actor, but I find myself convinced that you really believe in Thoreau's words yourself. Do you? It would be a fun chat to have.

Anyway, because of my experience, I've begun to recommend "my" version of Walden to anyone who will listen - certainly all my friends, including those I've made at the Thoreau AGs over the years. In fact, if you are truly a fan, I encourage you to come out to a Thoreau Society AG some year (in Concord, MA, each July). I believe you would be treated as a celebrity! (Well, you would be by me, at least! :-) )

Finally, a big "thank you" for the love and effort you obviously put into this work. I see that you've done many other readings for LibriVox, and I will certainly look into them. It makes a huge difference when the voice-over artist/reader is *into* the material, or at least acts like he/she is!

Take care, and many thanks,
Robin

Praise received for DSayers (Denny Sayers) from our 'Thank a reader' feature:
Dear Mr. Sayers,

I’m the mom of a child with dyslexia. My son, Isaac, is 15 and is in the 10th grade. He has quite a number of novels to read this year and he loves being able to listen to them on LibriVox. He chose your recording of Robinson Crusoe and he is loving it! He loves it so much that I decided to begin listening, as well, even though I read it a long time ago. I never thought I would enjoy listening since I’ve been a long-time lover of reading books “with my eyes,” but I have been thoroughly enjoying listening as you read. Thank you for opening up another avenue for me, too, to enjoy more books.

I looked at the year you recorded this – 2015 – and I thought you might like to know that nearly 8 years later your generous gift of time is still being appreciated. In fact, you’ve inspired me to consider volunteering to read a book as I really like the idea of my voice helping to improve someone’s life long into the future as you have ours.

It may seem like a small thing to some to sit and read aloud, but voices like yours have been life changing for my son. Thank you for your contribution.

Sincerely,
Melissa (and Isaac)

Dear Karen,

I really want to thank you for all the work and aesthetics you put into your readings, specifically the Anne series.

I listened to all of them many, many, many times.

They are simply perfect! Rather your reading is perfect! The books are perfect too but now I want to thank you for the many, many hours of pleasure your readings gave me and still giving me, I am still listening to them!

Thank you so, so much!

Very kind regards, Eszter
