And all are PL OK. Unlike the story, which is going downhill for poor Beauty, it would seem.

Cheers,

Yes, I reckon part 2 in general is not a good time for Beauty unfortunately!

All PL OK. I recently coordinated another Librivox project called Poor Blossom: The Story of a Horse that was even more tragic than this. That horse ended up at the knackers (and that was a relief for him!) I wonder that they thought these stories suitable for children.

Oh gosh! I don't know, but was it intended as a children's book? I think Sewell wrote Black Beauty more to inform people who worked with horses, but it wound up with a reputation as a children's book. Possibly a similar thing? Though it does raise an interesting question about whether children's books should have more serious/dark themes in them - I know people have quite strong views on both sides of this!

Anyway, chapters 31-33 ready for PL!

They are all PL OK.

I suppose it also depends on the child. I remember my sister sobbing over the movie version of Bambi because his mother was shot. And my son had to be persuaded that The Goofy Movie was going to be fun because it only had "funny breaking things" in it (he disliked movies that had a lot of violence, loud noises, and "breaking things," as he called it). But he would happily listen to all sorts of stories, so perhaps books are different. And I suppose children have to learn that there are unpleasant things in the world, after all.

You're really whipping through these chapters. It's almost as if I'm reading the book at my regular pace! (That's a good thing.) You'll be finished long before your target date.

Cheers,
Winnifred

Haha, movies are often guilty of freaking out children compared with books! I remember being absolutely terrified of the 1978 Watership Down animation. Although when I read the book some years later, it was definitely a strange one.

I read the book and found it depressing enough. Never did see the movie. Didn't really want to, after the book. I'm not surprised you found it terrifying.

Chapters 34 and 35 are PL OK!

Came across an Author's Note in Ch 36. It goes...

“Thank you, sir,” said Jerry, “but I have only taken out a six-days' license,* and therefore I could not take a fare on a Sunday; it would not be legal.”
* A few years since the annual charge for a cab license was very much reduced, and the difference between the six and seven days' cabs was abolished.
“Oh!” said the other, “I did not know yours was a six-days' cab; but..."

Should I be reading the note (highlighted by the *) aloud?

This is up to you as the soloist. You may include it, or you may skip it as it's not part of the actual text. I'd probably skip it, if I was reading  If you do decide to include it, my suggestion would be as:

“Thank you, sir,” said Jerry, “but I have only taken out a six-days' license, and therefore I could not take a fare on a Sunday; it would not be legal.”
Footnote: A few years since the annual charge for a cab license was very much reduced, and the difference between the six and seven days' cabs was abolished. End of footnote.
“Oh!” said the other, “I did not know yours was a six-days' cab; but..."

Yeah, think I'll skip it. Thanks for your help! :D

As always, wonderfully read. I did hear a couple of soft noises here and there in the latter two as if you were brushing up against or near the mic. Nothing that needs correcting, but maybe just be careful how you move about while reading.

Okay. Please let me know if they are too loud or irritating though!
