Hi,
The La Rabbiata Chapter 2 has been uploaded as a very 1st draft and in great need of proofing.
https://librivox.org/uploads/toddhw/msw034_larabbiatachapter2_heyse_read48fun_128kb.mp3
I am new at Audacity and a bit uneasy at making any corrections to the track of fear of messing it up. I will play with it, as I need to learn sooner rather then later; however, I figured I may as well just go for it and submit the 1st rough voice draft.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated!
Note: this is my base ... from this point I can only get better with lots of practice
Thank you!
Welcome, welcome to Librivox. I really enjoyed your readings. You seem to have a natural gift for it, especially considering English is not your first language. You did a great job.
There seem to be a lot of corrections noted below, but as you mentioned, this is you first/rough draft of the recording. You will also notice that the majority of the notes are of just things that you stumbled on that need to be deleted. I know you said you didn't feel comfortable with Audacity yet, but just keep a saved copy of your recording, then go to work and have fun figuring it out.
There are a lot of different ways to do the recording, but I will give you my two cents worth for what it is worth. The way I record is that as I record, and make a mistake that I note, at that moment, I go back, delete the error, and re-record that section again. It may add a little time to the original recording time, but, for me at least, it helps me keep the flow of the sentence and paragraph I am in the middle of, rather than having to come back and try to get the same feeling at a later time. Then, I go back and listen to it again, following along closely to see if there were any other errors that I missed the first time through (there usually are
). I then check the volume and background noise, tweek those if necessary, then up load it so the Dedicated Proof Listener (DPL [like me on this project]) can go through it and see if there is something I still missed (there sometimes is). This system works for me. I try to set aside enough time to do all of this is one setting. I figure it takes me about 3 times the final recording time to get it done and up. Sixty minutes for a 20 minute recording. Of course, since I am retired, that sometimes makes it easier for me to find large chunks of time
As you probably know, this organization is really quite large with thousands of contributors and millions of listeners. So, over the years they have established ways to do certain things so as to keep it the same experience for listeners wherever or whomever they may be.
In the “First Post” (which is where the Magic Window (MW) is along with the basic information about this recording), is a list of things to say at the beginning of the recording. These are things that should really be said 'word for word'.
So the beginning of your recording, after the .5 to 1 second of silence, you should say:
"Section 9 of Four Phases of Love. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit librivox.org." [Optional: "Read by your name."] "Four Phases of Love, by Paul Heyse, translated by George Henry Kingsley. La Rabbiata, Chapter II .” For the 'Section title' read what is in the MW for the name of the section.
I know this seems kind of picky, that it what the 'powers that be' have decided, and, as you think about it, it does make sense.
One important thing to remember, is when you are correcting errors in a recording, start at the end of the recording, and make the corrections from the end. That way the time stamps remain the same, and make it a WHOLE lot easier to find the places in the recording where the corrections are.
The ones with the
are ones that you probably would have fixed the first time through if you used my method.
So here are some things to look at:
At the beginning, could you cut the silence down to .5-1 second. It is now about two seconds.
1:05-1:06.25 This part should be deleted.
1:19.5-1:22 This part should be deleted.
2:25
he was long in foreign countries You added the word '
the' between 'in' and 'foreign'. The best way to correct this is to start at this point, and probably re-record that whole phrase.
3:24
of the inn approached them just at that moment down the hill, I heard
with
5:04 and stood waiting for the girl. You kind of stumbled and corrected this. Listen to it and then re-record what you need to.
5:20.5-5:28.5 You stumbled then correctly read the text. Just delete this part.
6:24.5-6:28.5 Delete this part
7:42.5-7:44.5 Delete this part
8:29.5-8:30.5 Delete this part
9:40 Delete this stumble
10:26.5-10:28 Delete this part.
10:49
She pretended not to observe it, You stumbled over this part.
13:13
and sprang so violently You stumbled over this part and forgot the word
so
13:26.5
Unhappy shall it be for him who is received better than I have been!" You forgot the word
been at the end.
16:37 Delete this part.
17:53-17:54 Delete this part
19:21 Delete this
At the end of the reading, all you have to say is "End of section 9.
Also, leave only about 5 seconds of silence at the end of the reading. Yours is about 9 seconds.
So, you can see, that really, the reading was very good!
Your volume is 95.4 db. The range for LV is 87-92 with a goal of 89, so you can see that you are a little high. The way to get it down is to go into Audacity, File, Import and then select it. After it is in Audacity, select the entire recording, this can be done by clicking on Ctrl+a, or clicking on 'select' in Audacity at the bottom of the blue box at the left side where you see the 'waves' of the recording. Then go to Effect along the top bar, click on Amplify (at the top of the list) the put in "-6.4" (the amount you are over 89) in the top box, then hit OK. Wait a few seconds, and then the volume will be decreased, then save it again as an mp3 file. Do this after you have done all the corrections above.
There is a program that was written for Librivox to let us see what our volume (and other info) is for the recording. It is called Checker. Here is a link where you can learn about it and how to download it:

DO NOT get discouraged. I wouldn't want the world to miss out on your recordings.
Also, you will find LV a very friendly, open and helpful group of people. We are all here because we want to be and are more than happy to answer questions and help you, and all of us, along in this wonderful adventure.
