Animals' Rights Considered in Relation to Social Progress, by Henry S. Salt (1851 - 1939) ~

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/animals-rights-considered-in-relation-to-social-progress-by-henry-salt/

In the book, Salt argues against the idea of speciesism, though the term was not coined for another 76 years.
The book also argues against vivisection, misuse of horses and wild animals, hunting and fishing, and the fur trade, and in favor of vegetarianism.
It is widely considered to be the first explicit treatment of the concept of animal rights. (Summary by Angus Taylor and James Hyslop)
Source text (please read only from this text!): https://gutenberg.org/ebooks/64498

Target completion date: 2023-12-01

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

OK, it's set up.

It looks like this is your first time as BC. I have added you to the list of BCs and can walk you through this

First of all, near the top of the first post, probably to the right but it may be fairly central, depending on your browser, you will see a stubby little pencil icon. That is so you can edit the first post.

A few things to note:

Have you lined up a DPL? If not, you should add a tilde (~) to the subject line. If you have someone in mind, I will need to give him/her access to the MW. Don't worry if you have no one in mind. Someone will volunteer.

You can change the file name at this point, and in this case, I would. It's very long. Something like animalrights would work, but it's up to you.

I will give you instructions for the MW in a separate post, but if you have questions, please ask.

Here are the instructions for logging in to the MW. It is the same for a DPL as for a BC. Please note, this only gives you access to the MW for projects where you are DPL or BC.

Accessing the System – First Time Login
1. Use this Link to go the main login screen: http://librivox.org/workflow
2. Click on Login (for BCs & MCs)
3. Enter your forum username.
4. Click “Forgot Password”
5. You will receive an email with a link to reset your password. Click the link and enter a password and submit the form. (Note this should be more secure than your 'regular' password)
6. Go back to the main login screen and use the new password you entered above to log in to the system.
7. When you log in from the main screen above, you will be taken to the LibriVox Management Dashboard default screen where you should see a list of your active projects along with options for dropdown menus, searching and editing your profile.
For more explicit step by step directions with screen shots, please see Accessing the System - First Time Login
NOTE: BCs should use their personal workflow login to upload files. If you recently logged in with the general login to upload files to a project and the system still had you logged in, you may see this:
You don't have permissions for this area.
Return to Librivox Management Tool Homepage
Logout
To remedy this, click Logout and then login with your BC login and password.

Please note, this doesn't always work the first time.

If you are still having trouble after 3 or 4 attempts, PM knotyouraveragejo

The MW is probably straightforward...
I started entering the titles, to show you how it's done. No need for chapter numbers. Hit enter when you have finished typing. You can either go through entering them all now, or as you go on, one chapter at a time.

I have entered you as reader for all sections.

The notes column is where you put the time for each file. In this column, you have to 'save'.

Paste your URL from the uploader in the Listen URL column, hit enter. The Link column is automatically populated when you do this.

The status column is a drop-down menu. Remember to change the status whenever you upload a file. That triggers a message to Your DPL.

There is no need to paste the link in the thread, as you would for a group project, although many soloists do. Just post "I've uploaded chapter 8" will suffice.

I think that's it. Any questions, please ask.
Have fun!

Oh yes, one more thing. It's on your schedule, but if life happens and you don't post for a couple of months, please post in the thread "I've been busy but still working on it" or something similar, so I don't think you've been abducted by aliens, and abandon the project .

What about the preface? Should I not read it?

It’s your choice. You set it up without a section 0, but I can add one in.

Sorry about that, that would be great if that's okay.

Thank you!
Remember to select “ready for PL” in the drop down menu in the right hand column.
It also helps to add the time in the notes column.

Hi Lucie,

I'm thinking about volunteering as DPL for this book, but I have a couple of questions for you before I commit.

1. How do you intend to deal with the appendices, bibliography, and index? I see you've included lines in the MW for them, but my understanding is that Librivox generally considers sections like these, if they aren't part of the main text, as optional and at the discretion of the BC. I could see reading the appendices in this case, as they contain interesting information, but I can't imagine a reader sitting through a reading of a bibliography and index.

2. Similarly, how do you plan to deal with the footnotes? I believe those are also optional and up to the BC to decide on. In my opinion, reading them in the text could interrupt the flow of reading/listening, and reading them at the end wouldn't make much sense.

Thanks,
Winnifred

Lynnet, thank you!

Winnifred, thank you so much! I'm thinking of not reading either, since I agree with all the points you mentioned. I could maybe say at the end of the book that I won't be reading the appendices etc, and that they can find them online and then tell them the address of the website. :)

That sounds reasonable to me. Lynne, does this make sense to you? If so, count me in as DPL!

Thanks,
Winnifred

You don’t need to say anything about it at the end of the book… in fact, you shouldn’t, as that lull count as “reader’s notes”, which we don’t allow. Instead, if you feel the need, you can put something about it in the summary.

Adding Winnifred as DPL.

Hi Lucie,

I've listened to Section 0. Very nicely read!

However, I do have a few PL notes for you. I ran it through the Checker and there are a couple of technical issues that can easily be fixed:
  • The volume is too high, at 92.9. The ideal is somewhere between 86 and 92, with 89 being the ideal spot. You can use Amplify in Audacity to bring this down by about 3.5 to get it to the ideal place.
  • There's quite a bit of background noise that could be brought down by applying Noise Reduction in Audacity (Checker shows it at 50.4 and I believe the ideal is below 45, and the lower the better). Let me know if you need help with this.
In the content, there are three small corrections you might like to make:
  • At 3:08, you read “a secondary and tertiary morality was considered good enough…” but the text reads “a secondary or tertiary morality…” I believe this needs to be corrected, as it does change the meaning.
  • At 3:24 you say “end of quote” but you didn’t say anything at the start of the quote. Do you want to add “Quote” before the start of the quote? This one's not essential -- up to you.
  • At 3:35, you read “this essay on Animal Rights has passed…” but the text reads “this essay on Animals Rights has passed…” Again, not a big deal, but you might like to correct it.
Please let me know if you have questions about any of this.

Thanks,
Winnifred
