Multilingual Short Works Collection 035 - Poetry & Prose, by Various
This is our 35th collection of short pieces, poetry or prose, fiction and non-fiction, in several different languages (except standard English) as listed below. All chosen and recorded by Librivox volunteers. (Summary by ToddHW)
This project is complete. Audio files may be found on our Librivox catalog page at https://librivox.org/multilingual-short-works-collection-035-poetry-prose-by-various/

If you are a new contributor, please read the following instructions carefully. Don't hesitate to ask in this thread (Post Reply) if you have any questions! Project roles: Michael (Kazbek) is BC, Todd (ToddHW) is MC, and Sonia (Kitty) is DPL.

1. Choose an acceptable source. This collection is for recordings of short works (under 72 minutes), in any language except (modern) English. We can only accept readings of texts that are in the public domain in the United States. Specifically, we can publish recordings made from scans of books whose title page shows a date of publication of 1927 or earlier, which can be found at Archive.org, among other sites. We can also use most sources found at Gutenberg.org (if the book page says "Public domain in the USA"). We can use Wikisource only if there is a scan available at the "Source" tab. We can accept excerpts from longer texts if they are reasonably self-contained. If you are unsure about a source, please ask us before recording it! Our contributors are also expected to verify themselves that the texts they record for LibriVox are in the public domain in their own country.

2. New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording (available in several languages) for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. LibriVox recording settings: mono (1 channel), 44100 Hz sample rate, 128 kbps constant bit rate MP3. See the Tech Specs.

3. The format of the "intro" and "outro". (Can be in the language of the recorded text. Partial translations are available on this page.)

Leave 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning.

At the start of the recording say:
"[Work title] by [author], read in [language]. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org" [Optional: "Read by your name."]
At the end of the recording say:
""End of [title], by [author]" [Optional, and if not stated in the intro: "Read by your name, city, date."]
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

For short poems and other texts shorter than 500 words you can use the following format:

At the start of the recording say:
"[Title] by [author], read in [language] for LibriVox.org ".
At the end of the recording say:
"End of poem (or [title]). This recording is in the public domain" [Optional: "Read by your name, city, date."]
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

4. Filename: msw035_[work's title]_[author's last name]_[your initials]_128kb.mp3 (all lowercase and without accents, compressing the first few words of the title with no spaces) (e.g. msw035_dielorelei_heine_xyz_128kb.mp3)

5. Upload to the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader (MC to select: ToddHW)
Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please contact an admin)

6. Copy the file link generated by the uploader and post the following information in this thread (Post Reply):
MP3: (link generated by the uploader)
Duration: (mm:ss)
Author: (author's name)
Title: (of the work you recorded)
Language: (of the work)
Text: (link to the text from which you read)
Keywords: (a few terms that describe the work)
If this is your first LibriVox contribution, let us know under what name (or nickname) you'd like to appear in our catalog.
7. Watch this thread for PL (proof-listening) notes. The PL level in this project is "special": our PL will follow along with the text and listen for any discrepancies that may change the meaning of the text. (For explanation of PL levels, see Guide for Proof-listeners.)

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

ah I see the new collection has started. So I can proudly announce the last two Yiddish poems which I rescued from the abandoned solo :9: So cool they can finally all see the day in our group projects.

Reader: fink (https://librivox.org/reader/2999)

Author: Morris Rosenfeld (1862-1923)
Title: Varzweiflung
Source text: https://archive.org/details/songsfromghettow00roseuoft/page/32/mode/2up
Link: https://librivox.org/uploads/toddhw/msw035_varzweiflung_rosenfeld_jf_128kb.mp3
Recording time: 3:39 min.
Keywords: despair, death, hard work, memento mori

Author: Morris Rosenfeld (1862-1923)
Title: Wuhin
Source text: https://archive.org/details/songsfromghettow00roseuoft/page/26/mode/2up
Link: https://librivox.org/uploads/toddhw/msw035_wuhin_rosenfeld_jf_128kb.mp3
Recording time: 1:30 min.
Keywords: poverty, work, hard life

I PLed the poems already, they are PL ok. I only changed the intro and outro to fit this project, so they still need a Spot check.

Thanks

Both are PL OK. Great work salvaging these recordings for the catalog! We don't have nearly enough Yiddish recordings.

Ciao Henrietta,

Normalemente, un contributo a questa collezione dovrebbe essere in una certa misura un testo autonomo: una storia, poesia o discussione completa. Questi due capitoli mi sembrano un caso limite, che riflette la loro origine di puntate d'un romanzo d'appendice.

I'd like to hear Sonia's opinion.

sorry, like Michael already pointed out, in this collection we do not include "excerpts" from books. You could take poems, or essays, or short stories, or letters, but it always has to be one "complete" text. Not just a chapter from a novel.

There are plenty of beautiful poems or short stories in Italian, if you would like to start out in this project 8-)

Mmhhh, I figured that the sections are catalogued in alphabetical order. I'd like to have one of mine next to Finnish; I'll have to record something in French - or Esperanto?
But first we need the Finnish!

As Zeno has shown, Achilles may have difficulty getting next to Finnish. Just when he thinks he's sitting pretty with Esperanto, some tortoise may sneak in a contribution in Estonian, and then Etruscan, and then...

So true. So unfair!
And, hard to believe as it may seem, it could be worse. If you want this project to reach the finnishing line, you'd better catch the tortoise and have some soup pretty soon - you know: turtles all the way down...
