If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

First one would have to determine if it's out of copyright.

Per Wikipedia, "It was originally serialized in the February, March, and April 1936 issues of Astounding Stories. It has been reproduced in numerous collections."

So if one can find those editions of Astounding Stories on gutenberg.org or HathiTrust.org (the only two sites we trust for PD-based-on-non-renewal texts), you can do it. Otherwise, the copyright status would be too murky.

Moving this thread to Book Suggestions, until we can get clear copyright clearance on this.

Internet Archive isn't enough, since they don't vet for copyright renewals.

This has been cleared by PG, just hasn't shown up on the site yet (could be months though).

If you do a search here, you can see the clearance:

OK, then, Jaybird767, you'd have to use the Astounding Stories magazines rather than the nice Lovecraft site text, since that's the text that has been copyright-cleared.

Also, before embarking on a solo:

(1) We do STRONGLY encourage a one-minute test (LINK) to check your technical settings. It's not an audition, but to make sure you're exporting at the correct bit rate, have your recording in mono, etc. It would be a shame to record a whole section, only to have to scrap it and redo it because of some simple setting that is incorrect.

(2) Claim, record, and get OK'd at least one section in a group project. This is to make sure you know what you're getting into. Recording a whole book isn't as easy as it seems. It isn't simply sitting down and recording. There's editing to do - and that often can take up to 5 times as long as recording does. In my experience, a ballpark estimate of 95% of brand new readers who start with a solo end up quitting before finishing. Please test the waters first before jumping in. :) Not only that, you're basically alone in a solo: you are the coordinator, and unless you have a very friendly DPL, you won't get much encouragement while doing your solo.

Also, there are summary pieces written by the astounding editors that have to be left out. If it's not the actual authors writing it didn't clear copyright.

I just wanted to say thanks for the additional comments you guys have left on copyright and which text additions I should be using, I really appreciate it.

I'm sorry I haven't updated recently, things in life got a little crazy for a moment and then my microphone broke and replacing it has been a chore (if any of you have any recommendations for a decent affordable one you use it would be appreciated).

I still plan on following through with this project, though I'm likely going to have to push back the timeline I had set.

This comes out of smooth reading at pgdp on the 26th so I expect it to post to pg shortly after that.

Also, I just cataloged a solo project for this book a couple of days ago. You are free to record a second version, if you would like. Some people don't want to record a book that has already been done, so this is just an FYI. https://librivox.org/at-the-mountains-of-madness-by-h-p-lovecraft/

I use a Blue Yeti USB microphone, bought at Best Buy for about $100.
It's dependable, sensitive yet adjustable, & very easy to use -- a must for Luddites such as I.
