Author: Gelett Burgess

Text: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/69614
Length: 51:02 (sorry!)

I honestly can't tell if this is meant to be serious or comical, so I guess I'll call it a serio-comical treatise on empathy and kindness. :P

P.S. Section 9 is missing the URL in the MW, as well as the file duration. ;)
Hi Tricia, Thanks for this, and for the heads-up on #9! :D Your selection is PL Ok! I'm in agreement with you that I'm not quite sure where Burgess sits on the line between "serious and comical," which, perhaps, has something to do with when he was writing (1923), and the social mores of the time.

Burgess' discourse on the pitfalls of gift giving brought back memories of the housewarming gift my loving sister gave my husband and me when we bought our first house. . . a genuine used horse collar. She thought it was just what we'd like made into a mirror for our dining room... https://www.ebay.com/b/Horse-Collar/209/bn_7023227843

Hi Dale,

Oh wowee! The word play in this humorous piece is something else! I hesitate to think what an English as a second language class would make of it! Thank you for adding this selection to 096! :D

You've got just one tiny repeat that needs to come out, between 5:34 and 5:38. Then all will be pl ok.

Hi Andrea,

Hi Andrea, Thanks for this lively portrayal of the early days of D. W. Griffith's directorial career and the Biograph movie studio in the old Cunard family mansion in New York city. Very nicely read! :D This makes a great companion piece with TommyMer's "Jackie Coogan and the Kid" for vol. 096. The old Cunard mansion apparently fell under the wrecking ball in the 1960's. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biograph_Company

Your reading is PL OK!

Hi Maurice

Well ... It would make sense to have both of Reagan's inaugural addresses in the same volume of the SNF, so.... why don't you send it on up to close out this volume, snf096! :)

Hi Maurice, Thanks for contributing Ronald Regan's 2nd inaugural address to vol. 096! :D There's only one muffed sentence, between 18.01-18.06 ("...as we fill the world with our sound -- sound in unity, affection and love."). If you could please fix this place, then your recording will be pl ok.

Sue,

Very good catch.
I've replaced the full statement from 17:57 to 18:06.

The only physical difference is that the running time is now 18:38.
Link to audio file remains as https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/snf096_presidentronaldreagansecondinauguraladdressjanuary211985_linden_md_128kb.mp3

Let me know if any further changes are needed.

Best Regards,

Maurice
