The Torrents of Spring, by Ernest Hemingway (1899 - 1961)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-torrents-of-spring-by-ernest-hemingway/

Volunteers outside the USA: Ernest Hemingway died in 1961. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 70 years for authors who died after 1971; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
The Torrents of Spring was Hemingway's second novel to be published. It would not be wrong to say that it is unique among the author's work as it is a clear parody of Sherwood Anderson's Dark Laughter and full of absurdist humor. Were Hemingway's name not attached to it, one might wonder who actually wrote the novel. The work is a product of its time and the reader is cautioned that there are uncomfortable portrayals of both a Black man and Native Americans. In truth, no character is treated in a sensitive way. IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

PL Notes Part One

Tension building. I fear for the bird. So far, it's interesting, and you're doing a good job conveying the despondent mood. Oddly, in Chapter 1 he never mentions the name of his wife from Mancelona, but he mentions the daughter Lucy. Then in Chapter 2 he mentions Lucy isn't home and has apparently left him. He says "Perhaps Lucy needed a new fur coat. Perhaps, after all, she had wanted a palace instead of this place. You never knew how you were treating a woman." Was the wife also named Lucy? Did the wife take the daughter away? Is Hemingway intending to confuse me, is the character confused, or is Hemingway confused?

INTRO: Begin with Part One (see MW recommendation below) instead of Section One. As Part # and Section # coincide, might as well cite the divisions used in the book.
17:56 missing sentence (in bold) “I started home,” he began. I passed the Mancelona High School—”
21:06 "In the South little children would be shooting off firecrackers . .", you say girls
22:50 repeat Odd that he should think of that
26:39 Was Menken really after him? you say Hankin (pronounced correctly in previous sentence)
28:48 jeune fille, French pronunciation is fee
28:58 Place Vendome, French pronunciation is Place, (short a (as in placid), and without an accented e)
29:49 Mon Dieu!, French pronunciation is more like "d-you"
OUTRO: End of Part One, End of Section One. Delete End of Section One, as Part # coincides with Section #'s

I recommend the MW Titles reflect the book divisions Hemingway set up, with their titles:
Part One, Red and Black Laughter, Chapters 1-5
Part Two, The Struggle for Life, Chapters 6-10
Part Three, Men in War and the Death of Society, Chapters 11-12
Part Four, The Passing of a Great Race and the Making and Marring of Americans, Chapters 13-16; Author's Final Note to the Reader

Thank you. Hemingway's purpose seems to be that of confusing the reader. This story really is so unlike him. The 'rumor' at the time was that he wrote a book that his publisher would reject, thus freeing him from his contract.

I wouldn't know what Hemingway is like or why he's so famous. My interest in him is that you like him, and I'm trying to figure you out!
