The character of slavery as practiced by the ancients and many other cultures around the world was different from the ethnic/racial slavery as practiced in the America's during the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade. In ancient Rome, slaves and ex-slaves often held positions which today are highly esteemed such as: actors, teachers, physicians, architects, accountants, singers, comedians, fire fighters, writers, magicians, artists, and musicians. Warfare and conquest provided a large majority of the slaves in the ancient world.

Other occupations included:

gladiators
wrestlers
farmers
miners
oarsmen (rowers)
prostitutes
etc.

An inquiry into the state of slavery amongst the Romans; from the earliest period, till the establishment of the Lombards in Italy (1833) by William Blair
