The description of the ship graveyard was really touching - sad and romantic at the same time.
Thank you, Kiki. The author does indeed have a flair...

Now, close your eyes and try to picture a town of thrifty Dutch folk building sea-going boats high up in the crater of an extinct volcano...on an island with no harbor!

Chapter 6 is PL OK!
He did completely and utterly demolish any romantic or heroic ideas about captain Kid in this one!

Yes, indeed he did. When I was six years old, I had convinced myself that I was Captain Kidd, and went about shouting "Yo-Ho!" and waving my plastic sword. Quite a comedown to hear the truth. :( Did you ever "play pirates" as a child, Kristine? (Or as an adult, for that matter? )

Here's another especially "dark and bloody" tale.

I'm sorry to say this next chapter contains a racist diatribe that's quite offensive to modern sensibilities, beginning about 7 minutes in. :( Hold your nose and try to get through it. The rest of the chapter is quite interesting.

I would liked to have seen the "solid gold altar" that survived the sack of Panama. I wonder if it still exists. Research required... :D

Chapter 19, Panama, New and Old
https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/wakeofthebuccaneers_19_hyatt_128kb.mp3 (23:31)

Later. Well, pooh. It's still there but it's really carved wood covered with gold leaf, and most of that is gone. According to Ricardo Gago, “in the beginning it was gold leaf, but over the years, due to lack of maintenance, it has been lost. The authorities have painted it with gold paint. If the lights go out, it stops shining. ” So much for Verrell's veracity...

Gold paint! That's really sad. :( Still, there's a pretty good picture of it here:

Chapter 20, How Morgan Kept his Promise
https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/wakeofthebuccaneers_20_hyatt_128kb.mp3 (35:14)

And there we are! What a rollicking grand tale of butchery and debauchery and robbery, "dark and bloody" enough to satisfy the most blood-thirsty of armchair pirates!

Yo ho! Where away next, I wonder?

Steve

Well, as an adult more likely, when I started appreciating rum. In my childhood dreams I lived in the world of Jules Verne - navigated under the sea in the Nautilus and, my special favourite, built and gardened in the Lincoln island. :) Oh, those were the times! :9:
