West Wind in Winter by Alice Meynell (1847 - 1922)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/west-wind-in-winter-by-alice-meynell/
This poem is taken from Later Poems by Alice Meynell (1902).
Meynell was twice considered for the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom, on the 1892 death of Alfred, Lord Tennyson and in 1913 to replace Alfred Austin. ( The first and only female to hold that honorary post, appointed by the monarch, being Carol Ann Duffy in 2009 -19.) - Summary by Wikipedia
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.
Project Code: P16otW7p

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave ½ to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
West Wind in Winter by Alice Meynell, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
Another day awakes. And who—
Changing the world—is this?
He comes at whiles, the Winter through,
West Wind! I would not miss
His sudden tryst: the long, the new
Surprises of his kiss.

Vigilant, I make haste to close
With him who comes my way.
I go to meet him as he goes;
I know his note, his lay,
His colour and his morning rose;
And I confess his day.

My window waits; at dawn I hark
His call; at morn I meet
His haste around the tossing park
And down the softened street;
The gentler light is his; the dark,
The grey—he turns it sweet.

So too, so too, do I confess
My poet when he sings.
He rushes on my mortal guess
With his immortal things.
I feel, I know him. On I press—
He finds me ‘twixt his wings.
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.
