The Life of King Henry V (version 2), by William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616)

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/life-of-king-henry-v-version-2-by-william-shakespeare/
Shakespeare’s famous second <i>Henriad</i> reaches its thrilling conclusion in this chronicle of King Henry V’s spirited leadership over his country—a Henry who is a far cry from the prodigal prince who we saw in <a href=”https://librivox.org/first-part-king-henry-iv-version-2-by-william-shakespeare/”><i>Henry IV, Part 1</i></a> and <a href=”https://librivox.org/second-part-king-henry-iv-version-2-by-william-shakespeare/”><i>Henry IV, Part 2</i></a>. Now grown up and more mature than he was in his youth, Henry V is persuaded by the English clergy that he has an ancestral claim to the French throne, and when France’s haughty Dauphin facetiously rebuffs him with a gift of tennis balls, Henry orders his troops to invade French lands and begin another violent and costly war. Thus ensues one of Shakespeare’s most manifestly patriotic works, giving us in Henry a model of national zeal, courageousness, inspiration and determination, with speeches and scenes of such grand poetic intensity that they have cemented Henry V’s legendary status even to this day.<br><br>But, as you shall also see, Shakespeare’s expert way of providing the subtlest critiques remains a key component of this work, as we see glimpses of Henry as a manipulative tactician capable of achieving his ends through questionable means, and we are also given the perspectives of the many soldiers serving in Henry’s army. While the return of memorable characters like Bardolph and Pistol provide us with the comic relief necessary to balance the grim realities of the bloody campaign, the introduction of others provides us with a more skeptical view of warfare and royal conquest. As ever with Shakespeare, there is more than one way to approach his plays, and there is no doubt that <i>Henry V</i> is among his most versatile accomplishments.<br><br>And to perform it all? Three men (<a href="https://librivox.org/reader/11305">Craig Franklin</a>, <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/10789">Tomas Peter</a>, and <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/9905">Brad “Hamlet” Filippone</a>) and four women (<a href="https://librivox.org/reader/10179">Sonia</a>, <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/13140">Jenn Broda</a>, <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/13852">Kelly S. Taylor</a>, and <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/10087">Sandra Schmit</a>), determined to give you a performance of Shakespeare's work that you will never forget. You thought you knew your Shakespeare? Well, think again! (Summary by Tomas Peter)

Let the fun begin. And yes, I am fine with you assigning me my sections to PL and edit.

Here are my characters who are in only one scene - Bates, 1st Lord, and Captain MacMorris (I apologize for this terrible approximation of a Irish accent! I have no idea why Shakespeare added all those "-ish" sounds in there. Is the character supposed to have an accent and a lisp?):

ah you beat me to first sections in, Kelly  I will PL my share from your files tomorrow

meanwhile here are the narrator's parts, to start off easy. They were really all very short. I pronounced all the French names accurately and also hope I did it correctly with the English names. Looking up Fluellen, I realized this should be Llewelyn, so I made the Ll sound the Welsh way (hopefully correct). If that is not the way you want it, Tomas, please let me know.

Yay, thank you everyone! Great to have a start here, and especially to have all the narration already done  Well, almost because we're missing 5.2, but maybe Sonia accidentally didn't upload it. Anyway, I'll PL some files a bit later, but everything is linked in the MW now for people to see!

MacMorris in 3.2 is PL OK! I agree, Kelly, it's a very silly way to render an Irishman's dialogue, but you coped wonderfully with it.

Sonia, your Dramatis Personae and most of the narrator files in yours and my scenes are also PL OK, though I have two PL notes to give:

In 2.1, at 0:12 I need "Nym and Pistol draw" inserted (it's one of those tricky directions shoved in the middle of the Hostess's lines)

In 4.2, at 0:08 I need two directions inserted: "Enter Constable" and "Enter a Messenger."

But otherwise, perfect narrating and I'm glad you pronounced the French names correctly. It's not a requirement for everyone, since I think sometimes the "Englishified" pronunciations (e.g. "Orleans" pronounced as "Or-leens") are necessary to retain iambic pentameter in the meter, but for the stage directions it gives excellent flavour.

I recorded it but accidentally forgot to make an mp3 file of the audacity file, so indeed it wasn't in the batch I uploaded

here it is:

https://librivox.org/uploads/kitty/henryv_narrator_5_2.mp3

and thanks for the fast PL, Tomas, I will correct the two sections tomorrow.

Narrator 5.2 and Bedford 2.2 are both PL OK! Short and sweet. Keep them coming!
