Athaliah, by Jean Racine (1639 - 1699), translated by Robert Bruce Boswell (1864 - 1933)
This play, with which Racine's dramatic career fittingly concluded, was composed for semi-private performance by the young ladies of the College of Saint Cyr, where it was first acted, as well as afterwards, at Versailles, in 1691. It was not represented at a public theatre till 1716, a delay due, it may be, to it's sacred character, though probably quite as much to the general lack of appreciation with which it had for long to contend. It is now universally acknowledged to deserve either first or second place among Racine's masterpieces, Phèdre being it's rival for the palm.
The scriptural narrative is faithfully followed as the main outline of the plot; and whatever Racine has added, such as Athaliah's dream, her first sight of the youthful Joash, and the characters of Abner and Mattan, so far from presenting incongruous elements, enhances the dramatic interest of the story.

Racine's final and, I think, greatest play. One of two we have not yet done.

Todd has kindly agreed to MC and Edit.
I will BC and DPL.

Some roles I would prefer to be gender specific (indicated in MW) others are gender free.

The character of Joash, King of Judea, is a child so would be best voiced by a young sounding female voice, but not an actual child, rather than a male voice.

I could possibly do Joash if you want a young sounding female voice?

I'd be happy to pick up Jehoiada or Abner as you like.

Hi
Sorry but I am planning to read Jehoiada myself and Todd, who is editing, will read Abner. :(
The main male roles still open are Zachariah and Mattan. You would be welcome to read either of those.

In that case, Mattan would be my preference.
