The Beau's Duel, or A Soldier for the Ladies, by Susanna Centlivre (1680 - 1723)
A comedy, this was Centlivre's second play, first presented in 1702, and in her prologue she has made a big deal of the fact that this play has been written by a woman. The title tells you what we have here: We have Dueling Suitors for the affections of a young Lady and her heiress cousin, and we have Soldiers "from Conquest back return'd with Laurels Crown'd, where from the Fair, their just Rewards they found". Add in the Lady's Father, a former Mistress, a Fop, and a Fortune-Hunter, and it's time for a rollicking farce.
(Summary by ToddHW)
This project is complete. Audio files can be found on our Librivox catalog page at https://librivox.org/the-beaus-duel-or-a-soldier-for-the-ladies-by-susanna-centlivre/

Here we go again. And, as you will see by the text, there can be many more Centlivre's. Hooray! I do regret to say that yet again, you will have pseudo "f" for the letter "s" throughout the script - but you all have proved you can handle this.

Gender neutral, of course.

Sonia will be our hardworking DPL, and as long as she does not find Toper's secret stash of spirits you can depend upon the accuracy of her forthright comments to you.

Ha, we've got a variety of humorous minor roles, too! I'll circle back after folks have had their choice, but meanwhile:

I think "La Riviere" the Valet and "Laric" the servant might be one and the same - judging by page 68, he's an Englishman whom his foppish lord requires to speak as a foreigner, so the name was probably forced on him.

I was debating whether I wanted Ogle or Sir William Mode. Greg's request has helped me make up my mind. Sir William please.

it's interesting that the fops and fools are more sought after than the gallant heroes of this play

If this is true, do you want to claim Laric as well as La Riviere?

Thanks, Todd

No, thank you though! I'm trying not to sign up for too much until I've delivered on some othe readings, and there are several good parts open yet.

Happy to read Laric as well, but I can only see 1 line for him on page 68 :?

There is a servant role in later acts. I combined them together with Laric in the MW.

Thanks, Todd

OK, I will read any lines marked Servant as well as Laric and La Riviere. We can sort out the voice credit later. How about "Laric, La Riviere, servant and general dogsbody read by Alan Mapstone"
