Hi Brian, go ahead and send me that welcome package if you'd like. I am afraid my own recording will have to wait now a bit as I have tested positive for covid as of Saturday morning, but in the meantime, I can learn the next set of new skills, concentration permitting.

Omigosh! Please be well soon! We do have a DPL since late yesterday. If you are interested in PL'ing though I think I have at least one project (Wonder Stories of Travel) that could use your help. It's here: viewtopic.php?t=95675 When I say help, it doesn't have any sections waiting PL at the moment but should soon, I hope. If it doesn't interest you I will check some others. OK? Take care of yourself, please.

Head and tail trimmed to appropriate length.
Noise reduction applied.
Volume "amplified," but I do not know how to check to see if it is in the acceptable db range.
Can you tell me how to do that, please?
Thank you.

Thank you for your prompt revision, Victor. You can grab a copy of Checker here: https://cgjennings.ca/projects/checker/ that should work quite well on your Mac. The cool thing is that you will know if your recording will pass LV tech specs before you upload it. If you have any questions about it, please don't hesitate to ask. Best wishes, Brian

This version has been run through MP3Gain and passed the Checker test.

Thanks much for the help with this process.

Next time, I hope to get it right the first time!

No problem. Thank you!

I haven't used MP3Gain (on my linux distro) in a while. It certainly was easy to use, but the version I used did not protect against clipping when I increased the gain on my recordings. I started using Audacity Effects for that reason because they do protect against clipping (so long as you don't check the tiny allow clipping box). But I'm happy it works for you. When I stopped using MP3Gain to amplify I still used it for Analysis for a while and I used ffprobe to ensure the other LV specs were met. But then I decided to just use checker for both purposes since it was one tool instead of two. I did notice that MP3Gain and Checker give slightly different volume readings - different algorithms, I guess - but the readings weren't really all that far off from each other.

Welcome to the LibraVox family and I hope you will enjoy yourself here.

The recording was very well done, but there are a couple of things in the recording that you should fix:

5:57.5 They hastened to give her a warm draught and to put her in her bed In this context, the pronunciation of the word is like 'draft', meaning a drink of something. It is a typically British spelling. The word you used is spelled drought

Your volume is at 85.9 dB. The volume we aim for at LV is 89.0 dB with a range of about 2 dB on each side of that. I know that you are new here, and there is a little program called Checker that will show you, among other things, the volume of the recording. Here is a link to let you know where to get it and how to use it: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker

To increase the volume in the recording, load it into Audacity, highlight the entire recording (there are a couple of easy ways. One just hit “control 'a' “, or at the bottom of the blue panel at the left, you will see a button called 'select'. Click on that and that will also highlight the recording.) Then click on the “Effect” button on the top bar, choose 'Amplify' at the top of the drop down menu, then enter 3, since that is how many dBs you want to increase your recording, then hit 'Enter', and Audacity will increase your recording to 88.9 dB.

I really enjoyed your recording. One little observation for future recordings, you can leave a little less time between paragraphs so the ideas continue to flow smoothly. Usually not more than one second works.

Thanks,

Wayne

Thank you for the tips! I re-recorded Section 4. I ran it through the checker and the volume should be 89 dB now.

Great reading again.

Thanks, and feel more than welcome to add more to this marvelous book.

Thank you so much for the kind feedback! I'm trying to record more and this was very encouraging! (Maybe I'll claim the other chapters of La Rabbiata if I find some time next week...)

Here is the new version of section 8, with the proper noise reduction (I hope, the Checker said it was fine). I added some noise reduction for the 4.30-5.30 minute to reduce the background noise (I assume it's my fridge, I hadn't noticed while recording), I hope it's alright now. I also cut that extra second at the start so it's now 18:08 and not 18:09 (a huge difference).

If I need to modify anything else, please let me know! (Oh, and yes I am using Audacity).

Ole hyvä!
Emma
Emma,

Since you had your recording PLed the first time, I am now the DPL for the project.

Your corrections were just fine. Your volume is 87.3 which is just at the lowest range for LV. So for future recordings, it would be great if you could raise it closer to the 89 dB that we strive for.

Section 8 is now PLOK

Ole hyvä,

Wayne

I would like to read:

Eye-Blindness and Soul-Blindness, Chapter V

If you are able to enter my name as C. A. Randall that would be great! If it needs to remain carandall that will work as well.

This will be my first read.

Thank you!

Based on your 1-Minute Test I suppose it will be a good one! Eye-Blindness and Soul-Blindness, Chapter V is yours! Thank you, Brian
