The Counterfeiters by Andre Gide (English translation.)

https://archive.org/details/counterfeiters00gide/page/n7/mode/2up

I read Gide as a young man because I was told to. I never saw his charm, but have learned that the young haven't always an appreciation of the old.

When books enter the public domain annually (1926/2022, 1927/2023, 1928/2024) if Hathitrust.org "forgets" to update because the year moves forward but it still says "protected by copyright law", can Librivox confidently go by the copyright date itself and disregard Hathi?

Just curious how this would be handled. Here is Gangs of New York (mentioned in the original post)

"Protected by copyright law."

The original 1927 publication is PD. The link you have is a 1928 edition - which I would assume is different.
Ah, thanks for catching that. I should have. But still, is the date of publication the singular only piece of data that matters?

For our purposes, for works published over, say, 90 years ago, yes. US copyright is much more complicated than that (with copyright renewals and such that might have made something fall into the PD when they weren't done), and when you get into the 1970s or so, then the death year of the author matters. But if you ignore the copyright renewal exception and stick with works that fall into the PD after 95 years, then yes - the nationality or length of life of the author, where the book was published, etc. don't matter.

Here's one copyright flowchart I found, if you want to really explore the ins and outs of it: https://www.sunsteinlaw.com/copyright-flowchart\

And, a table: https://guides.library.cornell.edu/copyright/publicdomain
School fiction: David Blaize
America Exploration: The First Four Voyages of Amerigo Vespucci
Serial novel: The Wandering Jew
Medieval England meets Civil War Americans: Centuries Apart

This looks to be a complete readable copy. I'll be running this at pgdp.net.

Thanks for pointing this one out. It looks like great fun to record as a solo. I'm looking forward to when it's at Gutenberg. I prefer to read from Gutenberg files.

This would be a fun one to take part in narrating!

It's in progress, but it looks like all the chapters are claimed. :)

Thank you very much, that will make recording vastly easier. I had to hold the screen a foot or so from my eyes to read some of the text on Archive.
