Because they were not Archaic at the time :D After all
handcuffs
does not tell you what they are, cuffs are things at the bottom of a sleeve and they are not usually joined together but language evolves, English more so perhaps than some, and now cuffed means shackled judging by crime shows.

From my completed Solo "Yorkshire Battles".:

maugrẹ̄ : middle English, meaning to be blamed for something. For instance Bob maugrẹ̄ spilling the milk. Not sure what part of speech it is.
Fan of all 80s pop music except Meatloaf.
