Volunteers outside the USA: Maria Montessori died in 1952. Her work is still protected by copyright in places like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years.
How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: June 4, 2009 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. Please note that if we haven't heard from you for two months, your section(s) will automatically be re-opened for other readers. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.
Set your recording software to:
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
DURING recording: Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording: Start of recording (Intro)
"Chapter [number] of The Montessori Method. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name]"
Say: "The Montessori Method, by Maria Montessori. Translated by Anne E. George. Chapter [#], [chapter name]"
End of recording
At the end of the section, say:
“End of Chapter [#], [chapter name]"
If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
At the end of the book, say (in addition): "End of The Montessori Method, by Maria Montessori. Translated by Anne E. George."
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!
Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
AFTER recording: Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
Save files as
128 kbps MP3
montessorimethod_##_montessori.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. montessorimethod_01_montessori.mp3)
ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!
Title: ## - [Section title]
Artist: Maria Montessori
Album: The Montessori Method
Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread): http://upload.librivox.org
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin) You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: stl - Shurtagal
Hello Shurtagal! I'd be happy to MC this for you, if you haven't arranged anything with anyone else, and if you don't mind that this is my first time as an MC.
Gotta leave for an hour, but I'll get your magic window set up shortly.
P.S. I took off the translator's name from the project title so I could fit the genre (EDUCATION) and my initials.
I remember how, in college, I got that part-time job as a circus clown, and how the children would laugh and laugh at me. I vowed, then and there, that I would get revenge.

Thanks Shurtagal.. you should be all set up now. All I'll need from you is a summary sometime in the future.

so I was going through and looking at page numbers by chapter and putting titles in the MB and had been planning to seperate the preface and acknowledgements from the introduction but it didn't make sense to have a 2 min section followed by many longer sections so they've been combined. is there anyway that the now extra section 23 could be removed? sorry for the inconvenience,
shurt

Okay, I've changed it to 23 sections. No inconvenience.. it just took a second.

I have read much of this book of hers, and I love it. It amazes me how much common sense that is used in Montessori is lacking in much public education in the US. We home school our kids, based much on the Montessori Method. I am so glad to see this being read! Thanks!
Once I get my "ducks in a row" and record chapters I already signed up for, I hope to be able to help this project to completion.
Ed.: KaryAnca: Welcome to LibriVox!! what name would you like to appear in the catalog, and is there a webpage that you would like linked to? otherwise feel free to ask any questions...
RE: Charlotte Mason: I see she died in 1923, do you know if she wrote much of her work down? B/c it would be cool to have more takes on various methods of education...
To Daisyn: Awesome I'll look forward to it.
Ed #2: Also I've got a Summary: what do you think:
In the early 1900's Dr. Maria Montessori began to reform educational methods with her work the Case dei Bambini in Rome, Italy. Montessori began her work by developing methods to educate mentally retarded children, the method she developed was used with several children who at age eight took the state examinations in reading and writing, the children passed with above average scores. Because of this success (which is known as the 'first Montessori Miracle') Dr. Montessori was asked to open a school for children in Rome which she did. It was called the Case dei Bambini or “Children's House”. Now 101 years after the opening of the first Children's House we have recorded the first English translation of "The Montessori Method" by Maria Montessori. This book explains the Montessori Method of Education which supports “spontaneous self-development” of children and is used in the Case dei Bambini as well as many many Montessori Schools through out the world. Your summary looks good. I'm guessing you wrote it? Or did you adapt it from Wikipedia?
