Come And See directed by Elem Klimov

This film is off the beaten track, considering it was made in the USSR in the 1980s. It depicts the experience of a Russian boy during World War II, in a part of Russia under the control of Nazi Germany.

As the film proceeds, the boy, and by extension the film viewer, are tossed into the abyss of war. I've never seen another film put you so far into the perspective of the main character, to experience the horror of war so directly.

We really cannot ignore the "Qatsi" trilogy:

Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi and Naqoyqatsi

Three excellent movies.

I fell in love with two movies the first time I saw them.

Ghost and City of Angels

In Ghost the scene where he reached around her while she was kneeding a pottery vase and the sound track began with Simon and Garfunkel's Unchained Melody sold me on that movie.

City of Angels was the inter action (or non inter action) between Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan that intrieged me.

Of course the first time I saw "A Summer Place" in 1959, I fell in love with it at the time, but mainly for the soundtrack.

Then I truly enjoyed "The DiVinci Code" when I saw it. Thank fully I'd read (listened to) the book prior to watching the movie.

So I'm really hoping that I haven't seen the best movie yet.

Good movies (in my estimation) are rare anymore. I grew up on westerns where the hero (Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Cisco Kid, Hopalong Cassidy, and many more) always won the fights, girl, but wound up kissing his horse.

Really telling my age there ain't I

Tks

The greatest movie ever made:

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp

by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger

I weep every time I see it, and, furthermore, weep every time I try to describe it to anyone else.

Its about: Love, Faithfulness, Loyalty, Honour, Getting Old, and Being Young.

and there I go... (sob)

Hey Rick and Chrisczech,

No cheating! You have to pick just one film. It has to be THE film. I know its hard.

THE film? That surely is difficult! But here you go - "The Sounds of Music" 1965 with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. A true masterpiece, with values ever alive - kindness, honesty and love for those around you and your land.
Keep your mind here and now, where it belongs.

At present, a tie between "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" and "The Princess Bride"

Both filled with some of the best dialog ever.

An excellent choice. I have the first two on DVD.

Koyaanisqatsi
When I first saw this years ago, I remember thinking 'this is what film is for'.

I saw Naqoyqatsi in a small cinema in Prague before it was shown anywhere in the UK. The I bought the dvd - I now have all three.

(Note: Powaqqatsi PAL version - region 2 - has a sound dropout in the surround sound. The USA version is fine)
