THIS PROJECT IS NOW COMPLETE. ALL FILES CAN BE FOUND IN THE CATALOG:

Link to another project comparing recording devices:

http://www.wingfieldaudio.com/portable-recorder-blog.html

Written in March by William Wordsworth.

This is a project which will allow us to compare recording quality of different mp3 players and portable recording devices. Please read the poem and post what type of recorder you are using as well as any post-recording processing you used on the file to improve the quality. Many recorders have pre-set bit rates and sample rates so please make sure it is submitted in Bit Rate: 128 kbps; Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz.
I use razor lame to convert to the correct rates.

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
“Written in March by William Wordsworth read for librivox.org by [your name] on [your recording device].”
Then read the poem:
THE cock is crowing,
The stream is flowing,
The small birds twitter,
The lake doth glitter
The green field sleeps in the sun;
The oldest and youngest
Are at work with the strongest;
The cattle are grazing,
Their heads never raising;
There are forty feeding like one!
Like an army defeated
The snow hath retreated,
And now doth fare ill
On the top of the bare hill;
The plowboy is whooping- anon-anon:
There's joy in the mountains;
There's life in the fountains;
Small clouds are sailing,
Blue sky prevailing;
The rain is over and gone!
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.

After recording, save file as

writteninmarch_woodsworth_xx.mp3 (Where xx are your initials)

ID3 tags (Version 2):
Title: Written in March
Author: William Wordsworth
Album: Portable Recording Device
Comments: Recorded by on (xx recording device)

Transfer of files (completed recordings)
please upload with the LibriVox uploader:

http://upload.librivox.org

If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: ehl - Starlite

Please post a link to your file in this thread.

When you post your link, please include your name as you would like it credited on the catalogue page and any URL by which you would like it accompanied. (Note: This is only necessary if you have not done so for another project.)

Please list your recording device with a link and any post recording processing you did to achieve the final product.

If you wish to contribute, please have your readings submitted by 0600 EST Sunday, March 30th

Here is mine to start the collection with:

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/ehl/writteninmarch_woodsworth_ehl.mp3

Recorded on the sansa C200 mp3 player.
http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Default.aspx?CatID=1199

Step 1 import to audacity
Step 2 normalize
Step 3 created mp3 file (wrong bit and sample rates)
Step 4 open razor lame to convert the rates
Step 5 Add id tags

Limitations: This recorder will only record 2 minutes at a time.

Esther :)

I recorded this on everything I had at hand to record on, simultaneously, but the Samsung YP-C1 ate my recording twice so I had to redo it. I had them all beside the laptop so there is some fan noise. I tried to keep them as close to straight out of the machine as I could.

1) Iriver ifp780 with external mic: http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/ehl/writteninmarch_woodsworth_smm_1.mp3

2 Iriver ifp780 with internal mic: Normalized to -0.5 because there was a fair bit of clipping.
http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/ehl/writteninmarch_woodsworth_smm_2.mp3

3 Kodak Easyshare Z650 camera in movie mode then audio captured in audacity.
http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/ehl/writteninmarch_woodsworth_smm_3.mp3

4 Logitech USB 350 in audacity on ubuntu as /dev/dsp1

5 Samson H4
http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/ehl/writteninmarch_woodsworth_smm_5.mp3

6 Samsung YP-C1: Internal voice mic. Great Mp3 player-- crappy audio: Applied normalize effect to correct DC offset but did not change the levels.

WOW thanks Sean. I will box them up later when I have more time. Can you list any post processing (if any) you did on the files?

Here's one from me: http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/ehl/writteninmarch_wordsworth_krs.mp3

Recorded on a sansa m240; a bit of noisecleaning and a bit of normalizing were all I did to it. It really is a hideous recording device... quite apart from the sound, it adds what sounds like a rapid heartbeat (thump, thump, thump, thump).

I'd like to participate in this project, but my two digital recorders have so very many setting that I' not certain just what to do. I suspect I should keep it simple and just send in one, the settings I personally use for every LV recording (with minor tweaking depending on the quality of my voice for a particular day.)

As a powerful effects machine (and drum machine) as well as a recorder, the BOSS BR-600

The ZOOM H2 is similar— although the options are minimum, although a change in those setting can make different recordings very different from one another under the same conditions.

I guess I'm answering my own question here. I'll make a single recording with the settings as I personally use them. I list the parameters, including any post production effects I might add in GarageBand after editing the BR-600's exported WAV file. Hope this isn't a bother.

Here's mine, on a Creative Zen Nano Plus:
http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/ehl/writteninmarch_wordsworth_law.mp3
Amplified, noise cleaned, normalized, and fixed bit and sample rates in Audacity Beta.

I'm not sure the normalization changed the sound much. Both the bit and sample rates are wrong on this mp3 player. I changed the sample rate (lower lefthand corner of Audacity screen under "Project Rate"); the bit rate fixed itself on export and I wonder if the sample rate would have done the same.

This is a very interesting project. It has occurred to me that if I want to do more recording than I can work in right now, I'm going to have to do it away from the computer since it is smack in the middle of the house. From the sounds of it so far, I'd have to plunk down money for one of the "good" recorders. Bah.

Yes that's exactly how I want you to do it. As if you were submitting the recording for any other project. List the procedure pre and post recording to give us an idea what is required to get the desired effect.

From Cloud Mountain:
http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/ehl/writteninmarch_woodsworth_ehl.mp3

Machine: Boss Digital Recorder BR-600 with Effects Patch Vo Comp2.
http://www.roland.com/products/en/BR-600/index.html
Mike: AKG C1000S powered condenser mike
Recording environment: baffled studio (optimized conditions)

Step 1: USB export to 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac
Step 2: Import to GarageBand 4.1.1 for editing
Step 3: GarageBand effects settings: soft easy compressor; parabolic EQ: 1420 Hz/+3.0db, 186 Hz/0.0db, 570 Hz/-0.5db, 1000 Hz -2.0db
Step 4: Standard GarageBand normalized export to a 128 kbps stereo MP3 file
Step 5: Tags set in iTunes

Limitations: 64 track 24 bit AD conversion recordings up to a total of 520 minutes of HiFi (best) recording quality on a 1 GB Compact Flash memory card. (128 MB card supplied.) Records in stereo with built in condenser mikes or external mikes. Recorder is also a drum machine, instrumental tuner, pitch corrector, loop editor, file editor, and complex effects machine.

So much depends on where a digital recorder is placed and the mike that is used. The nice thing about them is that they are portable and one can go to the best environment available to the reader and post process things to maximize a pleasant final sound. (My 2¢.) :)

Thanks Laurie Anne

My computer is in the middle of the house too and that's what spurred this project on. Trying to find quiet time is almost impossible with 3 teenage boys in the house plus all their friends.

In a sense this is my feeble attempt at finding an affordable portable recorder that has a reasonable quality.
