Joanna Traill, Spinster, by Annie E. Holdsworth (1860 - 1917)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/joanna-traill-spinster-by-annie-e-holdsworth/
Timid Joanna Traill’s every move is dictated by her overbearing sisters. Then she meets Mr. Boas, a man who works to give “fallen” women a chance at a better life. Through Mr. Boas, Joanna has the opportunity to take in as a ward a girl from a troubled background. When she takes Christine under her wing, her lonely, monotonous life starts to change for the better, and she learns to assert herself and live on her own terms, not her sisters’.

As the years pass, Christine gets to know Mr. Bevan, a friend of Mr. Boas’s, and eventually the two fall in love. Joanna advises her that she must tell Mr. Bevan of her past. Joanna also comes to realize that she regards Mr. Boas as more than a friend. How will Mr. Bevan react to Christine’s news? And will Mr. Boas return Joanna’s love? (Summary by Scarbo)

This is my first upload, so please let me know if it needs some sort of editing. I think I followed the directions correctly! If you say this is an acceptable recording, I will link the other 4 chapters I claimed. I did not want to waste your time if something was not right.

Thanks again!

Wow, that was fast! Thank you for chapter 1 - it sounds great, and I enjoyed the way you brought each sister's personality to life. I have just a few PL notes:

- At 0:29, "A Question of Settlements," you say "A Question of Settlement" (p. 1). (I apologize for the typo that was originally in the Magic Window.)
- At 1:40, "a little eloquent shrug," I hear "a little elegant shrug" (p. 2).
- At 12:04, "and knew nothing of the long stifled passion," you say "she knew nothing of the long stifled passion" (p. 8).
- At the very end, could you add a little bit more silence so that there's around 5 seconds total?
For the time being, I'll need a little more time than usual to PL sections that come in on weekdays. Thanks for your patience.

Hello!

Sorry for the delayed response, we were taken down by the flu! IN JULY! Here is the edited Chapter 1 as well as first uploads for Chapters 2-4. I tried to pay more attention when proofing so hopefully there are not a bunch of pickups.

May I also sign up for chapters 6-10

Thank you!

Also, what should I do for the illegible words on page 117? I tried to figure out what the missing words are, the line is “Along the streets THE LAMPS tingled like the points of fire that ILLUMINED HER past and revealed it’s darkness AND SHAME.”

Is this alright to use?

Thank you for chapters 1-5! And no worries, this isn't a late response at all. I hope you're feeling better!

Chapter 1 is now PL OK! I'll try to PL 2-5 as soon as I can, but it will take a few days.

In the meantime, 6-10 are all yours. Thank you for claiming!

Wow, great detective work! I was looking everywhere I could think of for another scan with that page intact, but no luck. I'm pretty sure that it would be okay to use that source to fill in the blurred text, especially since once you know the words, it's possible to just barely see those letters in the PD scan, but just to be on the safe side, I'll wait to hear from TriciaG about that.

I screenshotted the corner and changed EVERY possible aspect of the coloring until I could make out some letters. I was about 80% sure I had a good guess then googled the exact phrase and crossed my fingers. This website popped up and I knew victory was mine!
Will await approval though.

Thank you!

Yeah, we can't use that as a primary source, but to fill in a few words that are missing, that's okay. :)
