Cordelia decides to work to earn money so she puts out an ad. From all the replies she gets, one attracts her interest so she visits a crooked lawyer, who misleads her into spying on her high society friends, his aim being to find matter for blackmail. Cordelia spends the summer in her friends Gladys' house. Gladys had returned from the war in Europe with a young child, saying she had adopted a war orphan, or was he her own son? And who is this suspicious butler?
