Saint Distaffs day, or the morrow after Twelfth day from Hesperides (1648)
by Robert Herrick

We welcome all readers to record their verison of this poem in honor of St. Distaff's Day, which is officially January 7th.

What is St. Distaff's Day? Historically, it was the day after the Christmas festivals ended (the 12 days of Christmas), and most women went back to work with their spinning… but it was also a day of pranks and horsing around. Additional information can be found in Chambers' Book of Days.

Why? ... because there is a large group of fiber artists (spinners, knitters, etc) here at LibriVox, and we wish to celebrate this day in honor of our craft.

The full text of Hesperides (1648) can be found here.

Please be sure that your recording software is set to the following technical specifications:
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44100 kHz

Have questions on "how"?
Check LV's Recording Notes thread before recording: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

Partly worke and partly play
Ye must on S. Distaffs day:
From the Plough soone free your teame;
Then come home and fother them.
If the Maides a spinning goe,
Burne the flax, and fire the tow:
Scorch their plackets, but beware

Let the Maides bewash the men.
Give S. Distaffe all the right,

I looked up "fother" -- seems to be related to "fodder".

Here's mine:

I'm having trouble with uploading. when I type in the password, it keeps getting rejected. Is there anything wrong with upload.librivox.org? I'll try this again on the 'morrow.

Hi Mary,
They've updated the uploader & changed the password, just a few minutes ago I think - see this post for more info: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12024 - that's probably what's happened.
Just try it with those instructions - Good luck!
